MADISON, Wis. -- Freshman forward Jarrod Uthoff announced on Saturday that he intends to redshirt during the 2011-12 season for the Wisconsin men’s basketball team.
Uthoff is allowed to practice and travel with his teammates this season and will play as a redshirt freshman for the Badgers in 2012-13.
“When it came down to it, I figured I could have a bigger impact on the program in my fifth year than I would in my true freshman season,” Uthoff said. “Now I can use this year to develop my skills and get stronger and hopefully be even more prepared when the 2012-13 season starts.”
“Jarrod just turned 18 in the spring, so he’s really young for his grade,” associate head Greg Gard said. “I think looking at the big picture, he figured out that an extra year is really going to help him physically. He really thought hard over this and redshirting can never be a negative if you handle it the right way, and he’ll handle it terrifically. He’ll be a very good player here.”
A native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Uthoff joins George Marshall and Zach Bohannon on the Badgers’ redshirt roster this season. Marshall, a fellow freshman, announced his decision on Wednesday, while Bohannon will sit out due to NCAA rules after transferring from Air Force.
“My family, my teammates and the coaches were all really helpful,” Uthoff added. “I talked to them a lot and they helped me feel confident in this decision.”
