MADISON, Wis. -- The Los Angeles Athletic Club announced its Preseason Top-50 list on Tuesday and included Wisconsin sophomore forward Sam Dekker.
Chosen by a preseason poll of national college basketball media members, the list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who, based on last year’s individual performance and team records, are the early frontrunners for college basketball’s most prestigious honor.
Dekker, who averaged 9.6 points per game and earned honorable-mention All-Big Ten accolades a year ago, is one of 10 Big Ten players on the Preseason Top 50 list, the most of any conference. One of four true freshman to start a game under Bo Ryan, Dekker largely played the role of sixth man in 2012-13, shooting 41.8 percent from 3-point range during Big Ten play.
Dekker garnered his fourth career start in UW’s 2013-14 regular-season opener, tallying 16 points and seven rebounds in 32 minutes of action.
Other recent Badgers to appear on the Wooden Top 50 list include Jordan Taylor (2011, 2012) and Jon Leuer (2011). Devin Harris (2004) and Alando Tucker (2007) have also recently appeared on the Wooden Award final ballot.
The 38th-annual Wooden Award will honor the men’s and women’s winners, and will include the presentation of the Wooden Award All-American Teams and the Legends of Coaching Award. It will take place the weekend of April 11-12, 2014, at the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
