MADISON, Wis. -- There is a lot to look for at the Wisconsin men's basketball Red-White Scrimmage on Sunday.
Two seniors in the back-court, bulked up big-men Keaton Nankivil and Jon Leuer, a first look at Jared Berggren, Ryan Evans and Mike Bruesewitz... to name a few. As if that weren't enough, UW will also unveil its new uniforms this Sunday at the intra-squad game.
The entire team received redesigned uniforms from adidas for the 2009-10 season after donning the old jerseys for the last two years.
"Typically the team uses the uniforms for two years," basketball equipment manager Gary Poels said. "The new uniforms are made of a new mesh material that adidas has come up with. It is supposed to be more breathable, cooler and a little bit lighter."
The players can confirm this claim after testing out the uniforms during the preseason.
"We've only worn them once, but they're light, which is good," junior Brett Valentyn reported.
The new design, created by adidas and endorsed by the basketball staff, is getting positive reviews from the players as well, with a stamp of approval from both Valentyn and redshirt freshman Ryan Evans, who summarized, "I like them--they're good."
The fit has been updated to suit the team's preferences as well.
"I like them because the shorts are longer and a little more modern," junior Wquinton Smith commented on the shorts which were reportedly lengthened by a full three inches.
In addition to the longer shorts, the jerseys feature wider shoulders with Cardinal-colored blocks on either side. The back of the jersey also has a new feature as the trademark three stripes of adidas adorn the back collar of the jerseys, including two black and one red stripe. The motion W rests just below the stripes and above the numbers in between the players' shoulder blades.
Although the team is moving on to new jerseys this year, the old uniforms are not forgotten. According to school policy the players get to keep one for themselves; the rest are put to good use for various function. Some are given to the Badger Fund to auction off at golf outings, while others are presented to the Big Ten and ESPN for displays at the Big Ten Tournament and backdrops.
The new Badger uniforms will be displayed in action tomorrow at the Red and White Scrimmage for fans to see for this first time this year and on sale at Bucky's Locker Room in the near future.
