MADISON, Wis. -- On Thursday, Oct. 25, UW-Madison students will have the opportunity to team up with the Wisconsin men's basketball team and Coaches vs. Cancer to take a shot at fighting the world's deadliest disease.
The premise is simple: come to the Kohl Center from 3-7 p.m. and make Bo Ryan pay. The more students that show up, the more baskets made, the more money raised.
Ryan and his wife, Kelly, have challenged all UW-Madison students to shoot hoops on the main court for a good cause.
"Cancer is a terrible disease that has affected every single one of us in some form or fashion," Ryan said. "Whether you've had a family member or friend who has battled cancer or if you've fought that battle yourself, we all have a story to tell."
Kohl Center Gate A will open at 3 p.m. and the only person paying for admission is Coach Ryan.
For starters, Bo and Kelly Ryan will donate $1 to Coaches vs. Cancer/the American Cancer Society for every UW student that simply walks into the Kohl Center. Students will then be given an opportunity to knock down some shots to increase the donation.
For a made free throw, $10 will be donated and $1,000 will be donated for every half-court shot made. Any student who makes a half-court shot will also win free Wisconsin men's basketball season tickets!
"Please join me and my wife, Kelly, for an opportunity to raise money to continue to fight to find a cure," Ryan added. "We strongly encourage the participation of all the students on campus regardless of your ability to shoot a basketball. We really want this event to be about an evening of fun, an opportunity to meet your 2012-2013 Wisconsin Men's Basketball team and to raise money for a great cause. Please mark your calendars for the 25th of October and let's beat this disease that has touched us all!"
There will be other activities throughout the afternoon and evening, including pizza (while supplies last), men's basketball player appearances, free Wisconsin / adidas gear and raffle prizes including autographed basketballs, $250 Best Buy gift cards and more.
The evening culminates at 7 p.m. with the announcement of the final donation. At that time, Coach Ryan and Kelly will present a check to Coaches vs. Cancer based on the students' participation.
This special event is part of UW-Madison Homecoming Week festivities. Students are encouraged to visit uwhomecoming.com to stay abreast of the latest activities. Or, follow along on Twitter using the hashtag #UWHC.
Additionally, students will have a chance to be a part of The Grateful Red student section and a limited number of men's basketball season tickets are on sale. Pick up ticket information at the Oct. 25 event.
