MADISON, Wis. -- A year ago Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan hatched a plan to team up with the UW student body in an effort to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
Nearly $42,000 later, Ryan wants to raise the stakes in 2013 – if the UW students are ready to #MakeBoPay.
On Oct. 17, Ryan will host the second-annual ‘Shooting Down Cancer’ event at the Kohl Center to try to top last year’s donation of $41,279.
The premise is simple: come to the Kohl Center from 3-7 p.m. and take shot at Ryan’s wallet cancer. The more students that show up, the more baskets made, the more money raised.
“We do this event because my wife, Kelly, and I firmly believe that with enough funding, the cure for cancer is going to be found,” Ryan said. “I took this as an opportunity to interact with our students, get the players involved with the students and have some fun all for a good cause. I figure that one of these half court shots might be the difference in curing cancer.”
Kohl Center Gate A will open at 3 p.m. and the only person paying for admission is Coach Ryan.
For starters, Bo and Kelly Ryan will donate $1 to Coaches vs. Cancer/the American Cancer Society for every UW student that simply walks into the Kohl Center. Students will then be given an opportunity to knock down some shots to increase the donation.
For a made free throw, $10 will be donated and $1,000 will be donated for every half-court shot made.
There will be other activities throughout the afternoon and evening, including food from Fresh Madison Market, pizza and beverages courtesy of Dr Pepper/Snapple. Coach Ryan and the UW men's basketball team will be in attendance along with chances to win gift cards, autographed items and more.
The evening culminates at 7 p.m. with the announcement of the final donation. At that time, Coach Ryan and Kelly will present a check to Coaches vs. Cancer based on the students' participation.
It’s up to you, UW-Madison students. See you on Oct. 17 when we all #MakeBoPay.
