Wisconsin earned a No. 12 seed the East Region of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. The Badgers traveled to Boise, Idaho for their first and second round games at Taco Bell Arena.
Wisconsin knocked off No. 5 seed Florida State in a thrilling opener, with a 61-59 overtime win. The Badgers dug themselves out of a 12-point second-half hole, led by junior Jason Bohannon's 16 points and four 3-pointers. Junior guard Trevon Hughes' spinning bank shot in the lane gave the Badgers a 60-59 lead with just two seconds left. Hughes would then convert the three-point play and knock away the ensuing Florida State in-bound pass to preserve the 61-59 win.
In round two, Wisconsin controlled the game through the first 30 minutes, but could not hang on against No. 4 seed Xavier, falling 60-49. Led by Marcus Landry's 18 points and 10 rebounds, the Badgers held a 27-25 lead at halftime. However, Xavier would limit UW to 25 percent shooting in the decisive second half as Wisconsin's attempt to reach back-to-back Sweet 16s was thwarted.
