MADISON, Wis. -- Over 350 student-athletes participated in the UW Athletic Department's 14th Annual Student-Athlete Thank-a-Thon December 2-4 at Camp Randall Stadium and the Kohl Center.
Student-athletes representing all 23 sports volunteered their time to write over 3,500 letters to personally thank randomly-selected donors who generously give to Wisconsin Athletics.
“Once a year all of the student-athletes at the University of Wisconsin participate in what’s called a Thank-A-Thon where we simply write to our donors and try to give them a sense of our appreciation for everything they do for us,” said Chris Borland, UW Football.
“I think it’s important for us to voice our opinion back to them, to hear it straight from the source," Borland continued. "We are the direct benefactors of all of their generosity and it’s important for us to make sure they understand how much we do appreciate the opportunity we’re given through what they give to the University of Wisconsin."
Along with balancing academics and athletics, Badger student-athletes completed 4,000 hours of community service and outreach events during the 2013 academic year, including the 14th annual Thank-a-Thon.
“The Thank-a-Thon is an important part of our program and offers a chance for our student-athletes to personally reach out and thank those donors who continuously support the Badgers,” Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez said.
The UW Athletic Department is self-sustaining and relies heavily on private gifts to meet its annual funding needs. Contributions to Wisconsin Athletics are used to fund scholarships, facility projects and program support for all Badger student-athletes.
