MADISON, Wis. -- When the UW wrestling team learned that its first match of the season would be held on Veteran's Day Nov. 11, they were determined to do something special to honor the men and women serving our country.
The team first organized a recognition ceremony for veterans at their match, but quickly decided that that was not enough---they wanted to visit the local veteran's hospital. They fulfilled that desire on November 3 by visiting the William S. Middleton Memorial Veteran's Hospital in Madison.
Dylan Iczkowski, Brett Hochstaetter, Tom Kelliher, Connor Medbery, Matt Kelliher and Timmy McCall all visited the hospital and distributed signed team posters to the veterans.
"It meant a lot to us to be able to thank the veterans for their service," said Medbery.
One special moment the team will not soon forget was when they sang "happy birthday" to an 97-year-old veteran.
"It really made us appreciate the things we take for granted," said Matt Kelliher. "Because of their service, we get to do what we love."
The team will be recognizing the service of our local veterans at their first match of the season on Veteran's Day, Sunday, Nov. 11. The match will be held at the UW Field House versus Hofstra University.
All members of the military with proof of service will receive free admission and will be recognized during intermission. Gates open at 12:00 p.m. for the 1:00 p.m. match.
