MADISON, Wis. -- Jared Abbrederis is used to being on the receiving end of passes when he’s on the football field, but on Sept. 19, he was doing the distributing as he joined teammates and Bucky Badger in passing out toys at the UW Health American Family Children’s Hospital.

“It’s a joy to see the excitement on the kids’ faces when you walk into their room, and it is for a great cause,” Abbrederis said.

Abbrederis, Jacob Stengel, Kyle Zuleger, Jordan Fredrick, Chris Borland, Ethan Hemer, and Bucky visited 60 patients at American Family Children’s Hospital. The student-athletes and Bucky passed out toys purchased through funds raised by the Greater Bucky Open.

The Greater Bucky Open is a fundraiser golf outing run by former Bucky Badger mascots.  Proceeds from the outing benefit American Family Children’s Hospital and Bucky Badger student mascots. Some of the funds raised are used to purchase toys and gifts for patients at the hospital, which are distributed by Bucky and UW student-athletes.

The program offers a way for the kids to meet some of their favorite student-athletes and Bucky. It is a fun event for the children, but it is a great experience for the Badgers, as well.

“I really enjoy not only being a bright spot in their day, but it’s also how good they make me feel,” Abbrederis added. “It’s a great experience.”

Derek Hildebrandt, the founder and president of the Greater Bucky Open, considered this year’s visit a success and was thrilled to have UW student-athletes be a part of the event.

“It was an amazing hospital visit this year with lots of smiles and toys all around,” he said. “We truly appreciate having the football players and Bucky join us, and are proud to support the families and patients at the American Family Children’s Hospital.”
