MADISON, Wis. – University of Wisconsin football players T.J. Reynard and Leo Musso have an impressive repertoire of moves-- both on and off the field.
Stephens Elementary got a glimpse of the players dance moves at the school’s Wellness Night in March. The student-athletes danced along with students and their parents at the event that encouraged students to get moving and eat healthy.
“I really enjoyed participating in the Zumba dancing portion,” said Musso. “The ‘Let’s Move’ event was great for us as student-athletes to interact with the Stephens Elementary students and their families and promote healthy lifestyles.”
The Wellness Night was funded by a “Let’s Move” grant from the Active Schools Acceleration Project, an initiative of the ChildObesity180 organization, according to Marci Speich, the literacy intervention teacher at Stephens Elementary.
“We used the grant money to fund a one week yoga unit in our PE classes, kindergarten through fifth grade, and for the Wellness Night event,” said Speich. “The event was a huge success with more than 230 people participating.”
UW student-athletes are committed to promoting exercise and nutrition. This year, UW Athletics unveiled a new outreach program, WiscFit, which brings student-athletes to area classrooms to speak with students about the importance of healthy eating and nutrition.
