MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin football players Vince Biegel, Keelon Brookins, Kenzel Doe and Melvin Gordon, men's basketball player Nigel Hayes; and women's basketball players Michala Johnson and Malayna Johnson visited elementary schools in the Madison Metropolitan School District in celebration of Read Your Heart Out Day.
The event, in its 10th year, is held in conjunction with National African American Parent Involvement Day. The program's goal is to bring parents, family members and community members to read to classes of participating elementary schools in the Madison area.
Kathy Chamberlain, a teacher at Mendota Elementary, was very excited to have the special guests.
"We were tickled to have Melvin Gordon, Kenzel Doe and Keelon Brookins visit our first grade classes for Read Your Heart Out Day," Chamberlain said. "They were friendly, relaxed and engaging with the kids."
The student-athletes were also put to the test by the students.
"They even stayed for lunch and tried to stump the students on their knowledge about lions," Chamberlain said. "It was a great pleasure to welcome all three young men into our classrooms. They are welcome to return any time."
Brookins found an even deeper appreciation for the event as he reflected on his own childhood.
"I had a great time," Brookins said. "I had the chance to touch a young kid's life how my dad touched my life when he would attend events at my school like that."
