MADISON, Wis. -- After dominant performances in UW’s first meet of the 2013-14 season, junior Ivy Martin and freshman Brett Pinfold of the Wisconsin swimming and diving team earned the first Big Ten weekly honors of the season, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Martin, who earned a pair of first-place finishes this past weekend, earned the Big Ten Women’s Swimmer of the Week honor, while Pinfold garnered the Big Ten Men’s Freshman of the Week award.
Martin posted two first-place individual finishes in the season-opening dual meet against Georgia, finishing first the 50-yard freestyle (22.38 seconds) and 100-yard freestyle (49.09) and second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:43.39).
The junior also helped the 400-yard medley relay (3:47.32) and 200-yard freestyle relay (1:32.54) to first-place finishes en route to her third conference swimmer of the week honor. Martin’s 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle times were NCAA provisional qualifying marks.
A native of Sugar Land, Texas, Pinfold collected six top-three finishes in his Badgers debut against Georgia. The freshman placed first in the 50-yard freestyle (20.74 seconds), 200-yard freestyle (1:38.68) and 400-yard medley relay (3:18.32), while finishing second in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:24.24) and 800-yard freestyle relay (6:41.07) and third in the 100-yard freestyle (45.39).
Wisconsin returns home on Oct. 18-19 to welcome Minnesota for its lone home meet of the 2013-14 season.
