MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Wisconsin Athletic Department operates nine facilities, hosts over 350 events, and supports 800 student athletes. To be able to accomplish all of this, the Athletic Department annually hires nearly 400 student-employees to help support Badger Athletics.
These positions vary from team managers for the men’s basketball program, to suite attendants at Camp Randall and the Kohl Center. Most of the student-employees are UW-Madison students, and many have career aspirations in an athletics program.
With each department, students have different job functions and responsibilities. Here are just a few examples of what our student-employees at Wisconsin do.
University Ridge hires college students to assist in many different facets of the golf course. Student worker responsibilities include maintenance of the golf course, customer service, and serving food and beverage to guests. Students also work with the food and beverage department at various events as suite attendants, and in our luxury seating areas, as well as daily tasks such as assisting with team meals.
The Athletic Marketing office employs students and provides them with hands-on sport marketing experience at the Division I level. This experience includes ticket sales, gameday production, sponsorship agreements and special event planning.
The Guest Services department uses students to assist fans at events, provide customer service, and do facility tours for school groups and general public. Students also assist fans through working in the Athletic Ticket Office and assist guests in-person and over the phone, sell tickets in person and over the phone, process season and single game ticket orders, and prepare various mailings.
Bucky's Locker Room employees students to work in its locations at Camp Randall and the Kohl Center during normal store hours and at events. Badger Sports Properties employs students who assist with everything from creating sales proposals to game day operations and promotions.
The Equipment Room has students who assist with laundry for student athletes for both practice and games. Students do data input for awards and tracking sports budgets. They are also utilized to track the memorabilia trophies in our storage rooms and other locations.
Athletic Communications typically assign students to help full-time staff member with the coverage of one or more sports. Their duties include stats-keeping, writing features, preview and recap stories for the website. They also help us perform media relations duties at home events.
Technical Services employs students who assist the Help Desk with calls during the day and are the primary Help Desk support for all events. Students also assist with monitoring the student lab and assisting with technical issues as well as student programmers that assist with the websites.
Most of these positions are advertised on the UW-Madison Student Job Center website. Hiring for student positions mainly occurs during the spring for the upcoming school year. The Athletic Departments goal is to provide students with a great experience, while being able to have a job in which they will gain skills to help further their careers.
