UWBadgers.com Style Guide
Use the UWBadgers.com style guide to find templates and standardized styles for pages commonly built with our tools.
Working With Text
Use the keystrokes "Ctrl C" to copy, "Ctrl X" to cut and "Ctrl V" to paste text into the various fields in Netitor.
When pasting text into Netitor, paste into the "Content" field with Code Helper disabled. Then, select and cut the text, click "Enable Code Helper" and paste into field again. This will scrub the text of any formatting from Microsoft Word, etc., and leave it properly formatted for publication.
To create just one line of space between text, tables, etc., click "Shift Return" ... Clicking "Return" will create two lines of space.
Captions / Synopses
In the Caption and Synopsis fields, apply bold to text by placing "< b="">" before and " < b="">" after the text, without spaces between. You can also apply italics with "< i="">" and " < i="">" surrounding the text.
Recaps
You must select "Recap" under "Page Location" when posting a story for an event that is listed in your sport's schedule. Also use "Recap" when posting post-game notes or post-game quotes.
Adding a Headline without Publishing a Story
Use the "Add New Headline" feature in the Build Site Index screen to create "A" headlines that link directly to blog entries, videos or any other content that has a URL. Headlines should be preceded by "BLOG:" or "VIDEO:" in order to differentiate the content from other stories.
Example: BLOG: Hughes' NBA journey starts with Bucks
Working with GameTracker Links
When adding GameTracker links to stories, right click on the 'GameTracker' icon in your sport schedule and click "Copy Link Location" to get full link, including Javascript code, which will open GameTracker in new, automatically-sized window.
UWBadgers.com Style Rules |
Basic Guidelines
Text on UWBadgers.com should reflect the style guidelines of the Associated Press Stylebook and the University Communications Style Guide.
Headlines
Use AP style for both the "Headline" and "Teaser" fields, capitalizing only the first word of the text and any proper nouns.
As a general rule, the text in the "Headline" field should not extend more than a couple of words beyond the end of the "Submit" button directly above the "Headline" field. This will keep the headline text on a single line once published.
Captions / Synopses
Bold all photo captions.
The "Synopsis" field can generally be filled in with the first paragraph of your story text. Do NOT include the dateline.
Datelines
Datelines should be formatted in AP style and in bold, with two single dashes following.
Example: MADISON, Wis. -- Text starts here...
Working with Links
Links should be pulled out from the text and included above the body of the story, with the link text in bold and links separated by the "|" character, with two spaces on either side. A bullet should always precede the links.
Example: Box Score | Box Score Get Adobe Acrobat Reader
| Gameday Blog
Important note: When posting a recap, Netitor will automatically generate links for HTML stats, notes or quotes pages and photo galleries that are tied to the same event. The best practice is to publish the story without adding any additional links manually. You can then return to the page using "Edit Existing Page" to add additional links and bold the link text that Netitor has automatically generated.
Links to PDF files should be immediately followed by the
icon, which can be copied from below. Do NOT include "(PDF)" in the link text.
Times/Dates
List all times as Central.
Always include "(CT)" when referring to the time of an event ocurring outside of Madison or in the listing of a TV schedule. This is only necesary in a story's first reference to time.
Example: ... at 7 p.m. (CT).
Use AP style for abbreviations of months in a specific date. Spell out months fully when not referring to a specific date. Days of the week are never abbreviated.
Blogs
Stick with short headlines, generally no more than 5-6 words.
Use photos whenever possible. Crop vertical action photos to 250px wide in Photoshop before uploading.
Use the 'Extended' tab to divide up long entries. Always include a single return at the end of the 'Body' text if using the 'Extended' feature.
Links (such as to a complete story) should be included, in bold, at the bottom of the entry.
Live Blogs
"Gameday Blog" is the term used for our live blogs and should always be presented with both words capitalized.
All live blogs should be titled this way: "Sport Name vs. Opponent Gameday Blog"
Examples: Men's Basketball vs. Purdue Gameday Blog | Softball vs. Ohio State Gameday Blog
Title live blogs consistently in both CoverItLive setup and your Netitor headline.
Pertinent links (GameTracker, event preview story, etc. should be bulleted and bolded at top of text intro)
