Badgers named defensive player and freshman of the week
MADISON, Wis. – For the third straight week, the sixth-ranked Wisconsin volleyball team picked up weekly Big Ten Conference honors.
Junior Tionna Williams was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week while Dana Rettke was named the co-Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Williams earns her sixth career defensive player of the week honor and the first of the season. Rettke earns her second Freshman of the Week award of the season.
Williams was named the MVP of the HotelRED Invitational, earning her first career tournament MVP honor. The 6-2 middle blocker recorded 17 blocks on the weekend to average 2.83 blocks per set. She had a career-high and UW three-set single-match record with 11 blocks vs. Lipscomb. She also added a match-high six blocks vs. Texas A&M.
Williams recorded her first career double-double with 10 kills and 11 blocks vs. Lipscomb on Thursday. She averaged 3.00 kills per set over the two matches, hitting .500 (18-2-32).
Rettke was named the HotelRED Invitational All-Tournament team, earning her first all-tournament honor. A 6-8 middle blocker, Rettke led the Badgers on the weekend with 4.17 kills per set while hitting .512 (25-3-43). She had double-figure kills in both matches, putting away 13 kills vs. Lipscomb and 12 vs. Texas A&M. Rettke added 1.50 blocks per set and 0.33 service aces per set, scoring on one service ace in each match.
No. 5 Wisconsin (7-0) wraps up the non-conference season by hosting the Badger Classic on Thursday through Saturday in the UW Field House. UW takes on Marquette (4-4) and Southern Mississippi (8-4), coached by former Badger Amanda Berkley, in the tournament. Wisconsin and Marquette play at 7 p.m. on Thursday while it's a battle of the Golden Eagles on Friday at 6 p.m. The Badgers face Southern Miss at 7 p.m. on Saturday. All matches are in the UW Field House.
