Badgers look forward to fall season following successful summer campaign
MADISON, Wis. – The 2016-17 Wisconsin women's golf season may have ended on May 10 at the NCAA Columbus Regional but that doesn't mean the competition was over. A number of Badgers played in tournaments throughout the summer, recording some impressive results. Here's a quick glance at some of their success on the links:
Senior Gabby Curtis
Curtis won the Badger Mutual Insurance Women's Amateur in late July with rounds of 72 and 68. Her 6-under par total was six shots better than the runner-up. With the win, she earned an exemption into the PHC Classic Symetra Tour event held at Brown Deer Golf Club on Aug. 4-6. It was her second appearance in the PHC Classic.
Senior Aya Johnson
Johnson won the Michigan Women's Amateur in mid-July, playing seven rounds of golf in five days. She finished stroke play with rounds of 75-71, then won five rounds of match play.
Two weeks prior to that, Johnson won the US Women's Amateur qualifier in Portage, Michigan. She then competed in the US Women's Amateur at the San Diego Country Club in early August.
Senior Becky Klongland
Klongland became the first golfer to win the Wisconsin State Women's Amateur Championship four years in a row. She shot rounds of 70 and 75 as the 54-hole event was shortened to 36 due to heavy rains.Â
Klongland also tied for fifth place at the US Women's Amateur Qualifier in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, missing out on qualifying for the US Women's Amateur by one spot. In addition, she played in the Monday qualifier for the Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic in Green Bay, Wis.
Junior Tess Hackworthy
Hackworthy won the Wisconsin State Open for the second year in a row defeating former Badger Jessie Gerry in playoff.Â
Like Klongland, Hackworthy competed in the US Women's Amateur Qualifier in Hoffman Estates at the end of June, winning the event and qualifying for the US Women's Amateur in San Diego.
Junior Jessica Reinecke
Reinecke finished third at the Badger Mutual Insurance Women's Amateur, seven strokes back of Curtis. Like Klongland, she also played in the Monday Qualifier for the Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic in Green Bay.
"It was a really good summer," head coach Todd Oehrlein said. "I was really proud of how everyone played. We had some great results and I'm really looking forward to getting everyone back together soon to continue their development."
The Badgers open to the 2017-18 season at the Minnesota Invitational on Sept. 11-12 before hosting the East-West Match Play at University Ridge on Sept. 17-19.Â
