Guard to compete in FIBA World Cup

MADISON, Wis. – Kendra Van Leeuwen, a sophomore on the University of Wisconsin women's basketball team, has been named to the Canadian U19 Women's National Team that will compete at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup 2017 in Udine and Cividale del Friuli, Italy. 

Van Leeuwen, a 5-10 guard, started all 31 games as a true freshman for the Badgers in 2016-17. The Brantford, Ontario, native averaged 4.0 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. She led the team with 102 assists on the year, averaging 3.3 helpers per game.

A two-time member of the Canadian Junior National Team, Van Leeuwen represented Canada at the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Women's Championship in Valdivia, Chile, winning a silver medal. She was also a member of the Canadian U17 national team in 2014 with the team placing sixth at the World Championships

Carly Clarke (Ryerson University) takes the helm in her second year as Head Coach. Clarke is joined by Assistant Coaches Ryan Thorne (McGill University) and Claire Meadows (UBC Okanagan).

The team travels to Voiron, France, for an exhibition tournament from Saturday through Monday en route to Italy. Fourth-ranked Canada is set to compete against third-ranked France, seventh-ranked Australia and ninth-ranked China, and will face host France Saturday at 11 a.m.

The women tip-off at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup 2017 on July 22 against 15th-ranked Korea at 7 a.m. in Udine, Italy.

Canada looks to improve upon its eighth-place finish from 2015.
