Guard has chance to compete in France and Italy

MADISON, Wis. Kendra Van Leeuwen, a sophomore on the Wisconsin women's basketball team, is one of 24 athletes who was invited to participate in the U19 National Team invitational tryouts at Humber College in Toronto, Ontario, from Sunday through Tuesday.

Van Leeuwen, a 5-10 guard, started all 31 games as a true freshman for the Badgers in 2016-17. The Brantford, Ontario, native averaged 4.0 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. She led the team with 102 assists on the year, averaging 3.3 helpers per
game.

A two-time member of the Canadian Junior National Team, Van Leeuwen represented Canada at the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Women's Championship in Valdivia, Chile, winning a silver medal. She was also a member of the Canadian U17 national team in 2014 with the team placing sixth at the World Championships

Training camp will follow tryouts from July 5-11 at Humber College and the finalized team roster will travel to Voiron, France, for an exhibition tournament. Canada is set compete against third-ranked France, seventh-ranked Australia and ninth-ranked China from July 15-17.

The team will then travel to Italy to compete at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup 2017 where it looks to improve upon its eighth-place finish from 2015. The women tip-off the tournament on July 22 against 15th-ranked Korea in Udine, Italy.

Canada is currently ranked fourth worldwide in the FIBA youth girls rankings.
