Play-by-play call for volleyball match named best in state
Listen to the award-winning call
MADISON, Wis. – Jon Arias, the voice of the Wisconsin volleyball team, received a Wisconsin Broadcasters Association award on Saturday for best sports play-by-play of the year. Arias received the award at the WBA's Awards Gala at the Madison Marriott West.
Arias won for his and Pete Waite's call of the Badgers' fourth-set win over Ohio State in the NCAA Sweet 16 in the UW Field House on Dec. 9, 2016. Wisconsin trailed 19-14 in the fourth set before going on a 6-0 run to lead 20-19. The Badgers claimed the must-win set 25-22 and went on to defeat the Buckeyes 15-13 in the fifth set to advance to the Elite Eight.
"There are a number of great play-by-play voices at every level in this state and to be able to receive this recognition is very exciting," Arias said. "To be able to go from not knowing much about the sport of volleyball in 2008, when I first started calling Badger matches, to being recognized for my work in that specific sport, I hope shows the passion I have for both Badger volleyball and sports broadcasting.
Â
"I also know how important a good color analyst is too creating an overall great broadcast and I'm fortunate to work with Pete Waite and Diane Nordstrom."
Â
Arias has been the voice of the Badgers for nine seasons. Â He also serves as the play-by-play voice of the Wisconsin women's basketball team.
"It's a very deserving honor for a very talented guy," head volleyball coach Kelly Sheffield said. "Jon's passion for what he does is so evident and he skillfully relays that on to the audience. We have one of the largest followings in our sport and I'm absolutely convinced that part of that is due to Jon and his ability to bring a game to life to his listeners. Â We are fortunate to have him as part of our team."
