MADISON, Wis. – After scoring 18 points for the Wisconsin men's track and field at the 2017 Big Ten Outdoor Championships, senior
Malachy Schrobilgen was named the Big Ten Track Athlete of the Championship, the conference announced Tuesday.
Schrobilgen scored almost a quarter of UW's 73 points thanks to a win in the 10,000 meters and a runner-up showing in the 5000 meters, leading the Badgers to a fourth-place showing.
"This is a well-deserved honor for Malachy," UW Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Mick Byrne said. "There were many outstanding performances this past weekend at our conference meet. This award speaks volumes for the understanding and respect our coaches have for the work Malachy has done for this program, not just this past weekend, but during his entire Badger career."
A native of Oak Park, Illinois, Schrobilgen won his second career Big Ten track title on Friday with his triumph in the 10,000 meters. He crossed the line in 29 minutes, 27.48 seconds to earn his second Big Ten 10K title in three years.
Two days later, Schrobilgen finished second in the 5000 meters behind teammate
Morgan McDonald, helping UW earn 18 points in the penultimate event of the meet. Schrobilgen crossed the line in 14:16.24 despite windy conditions in University Park, Pennsylvania.
???????Schrobilgen becomes the first Badger to earn the athlete of the outdoor championships honor since Demi Omole was named the 2007 Big Ten Track Athlete of the Outdoor Championships. Schrobilgen's honor also completes a sweep during the 2017 track and field season as teammate
Morgan McDonald was named the 2017 Big Ten Track Athlete of the Indoor Championships.
In addition,
Sawyer Smith and Banke Oginni were named UW's Big Ten Sportsmanship Honorees for the outdoor track and field season.
