Badgers headed back to NCAA tournament

Wisconsin going to Eugene Regional in sixth tourney appearance

MADISON, Wis. – For the sixth time in program history, the Wisconsin softball team has earned a bid to the NCAA tournament.

The Badgers (33-15 overall, 11-11 Big Ten) are unseeded and will travel to the Eugene Regional hosted by Oregon this Friday-Sunday, May 19-21.

UW opens regional action against Missouri on May 19 at 8 p.m. CT at Jane Sanders Stadium and the game will be live on ESPN. Oregon, the tournament's No. 3 overall seed, will play UIC. The four teams will compete in a double-elimination format, with the winner advancing to the Super Regional round.

UW and Missouri have seen each other three times in school history. The Badgers took one win, 8-3, from the Tigers in 2001. Missouri is 29-26 overall this season and 7-16 in the SEC.

Wisconsin is headed back to familiar territory in Eugene. The Badgers have seen the Ducks seven times in UW history. The Ducks are 47-6 this season with a .887 winning percentage and 17-6 against the PAC-12 field. Oregon is currently on a 10-game winning streak.

UW leads the all-time series with UIC, 9-4 and 2-1 at neutral sites. The last time the two teams faced was in 2013 when the Badgers won 2-1 in eight innings. The flames are 38-20 overall on the season with a 20-4 Horizon League record.

The Badgers are 5-10 all-time in the NCAA tournament with the last appearance and NCAA tournament win coming in 2014 against Albany, 1-0.

Current UW senior Chloe Miller was named to the All-Tournament team in 2014 after hitting two home runs against Albany and tallying three hits in the loss to Oregon that ended UW's run.

The 64-team field was selected from 283 NCAA Division I institutions sponsoring the sport of softball. Of the 64 teams, 32 teams received automatic qualification, and 32 more were selected on an at-large basis.

Regionals will be held May 19-21 on 16 campus sites. At each campus site, a four-team, double-elimination tournament will be conducted and the 16 winning teams advance to the Super Regionals.

Super Regional competition is a best-of-three series that will be conducted May 25-28 at eight campus sites.

From there, the eight winning teams will advance to the 2017 NCAA Women's College World Series, June 1-7 in Oklahoma City.
