Wisconsin to play 16 matches against NCAA tournament teams

2017 Volleyball Schedule

MADISON, Wis. – Another tough schedule awaits the Wisconsin volleyball team in 2017. The Badgers released their fall schedule on Tuesday and will play 16 matches against 2016 NCAA tournament teams, including six teams that advanced to at least the Sweet 16.

"It's a challenging schedule that has a lot of matches against teams that were in the tournament last season, and also quite a few teams that were on the bubble of getting in," head coach Kelly Sheffield said. "I'm also excited about playing six out-of-conference matches in the Field House."

Twelve 2017 opponents won at least 20 matches in 2016 while nine teams were ranked or receiving votes in the final American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Coaches' poll.

Big Ten Conference opponents No. 3 Minnesota (29-4 in 2016) and No. 4 Nebraska (31-3) both advanced to the NCAA national semifinals. Fellow conference teams No. 10 Penn State (24-10), No. 14 Michigan (24-11), and No. 18 Ohio State (22-13) were all Sweet 16 participants while No. 19 Michigan State (25-9) and Purdue (19-14) competed in the second round.

Non-conference opponents No. 11 North Carolina (29-3), Kansas State (21-9), Lipscomb (22-7), Texas A&M (21-9), and Marquette (23-8) was also NCAA tournament teams while Southern Miss (23-8), under former Badger Amanda Berkley, was 23-8 last season.

The Badgers host the fourth-annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Aug. 25-26 to open the season. Wisconsin and Minnesota represent the Big Ten and take on UNC and Louisville from the ACC.

UW travels to Kansas State for the K-State Invitational on Sept. 1-2 before returning home for two straight challenges. The Badgers host Lipscomb and Texas A&M in the HotelRED Invitational on Sept. 7-9 and Marquette and Southern Miss in the Badger Invitational on Sept. 14-16.

Wisconsin opens Big Ten play on Sept. 22-23, hosting Michigan State and Michigan on back-to-back nights. The Badgers, who tied for second in last year's conference race, host the six top finishers from last season, including reigning champion Nebraska and second-place finisher Minnesota. UW also welcomes fourth-place Penn State, fifth-place Michigan State, sixth-place Michigan and seventh-place Ohio State to the UW Field House.
