Wisconsin vs. Michigan
Feb. 17, 2017
Madison, Wis. -- Kohl Center

Head Coach Tony Granato
On the no-goal call on Grant Besse's shot
"I was going to try to challenge it because I thought it went in. I never thought he had it covered. The ref said he had a great view of it and blew the whistle immediately – making the play dead. I kept saying I wanted to challenge it because I thought it went in right away. It was a quick whistle, but he was right on top of it. We would have liked to have that one but the ref was there and made the call he thought was right."

On not caving after Michigan responded
"When they tied it 2-2 was when I thought our team stepped up. I don't think it was a perfect game for us by any means, but I thought we were playing well enough and creating chances. Luke Kunin made a great pass to Trent Frederic and (Aidan Cavallini's) pass to (Jarod) Zirbel. I thought those were big moments and big for our team. They still had plenty of time to get another one but we got back after it and made a couple plays that were huge."

On playing a full 60 minutes
"I don't know about a full 60 minutes but there was a 10-minute or so in the second that showed how we need to play for 60 minutes. I thought our energy, pursuit, our five working on one was pretty apparent in the second period. There were parts of the game that were really good. Michigan also did some things to not allow that in parts of the game. Tomorrow we can be a little better but a win is a win in the Big Ten -- these games are tough. That's a team that plays hard and physical and we'll take it. We'll try to be better tomorrow and see if we can get another one."

On Matt Ustaski's versatility between lines
"The versatility of all our lines has been important. His size with those guys and the ability to keep the puck in the offensive zone really helps (Trent Frederic) and Luke(Kunin). I thought he made some great plays on the boards tonight. The big boy made some plays to get the puck out of our end and to the guys up ahead to get them going. He played a real solid game."

On the first line's play tonight
"Two goals by (Trent Frederic) is huge obviously. He was solid. He's been very consistent for a young player. If you look at last weekend, our team didn't have the best weekend so he probably didn't either but overall, from day one, he's been an impact in every game. Tonight it was no different with getting those two goals. It says a lot about who he is. He's not a young player that is inexperienced at times. He's an elite player right now. For a freshman, a kid that young, is something special. To play like that offensively is pretty impressive."

On closing out the game
"They became a little more aggressive trying to get the puck out of their end. I don't think we did anything different after we got the 3-2 lead, I just thought they were a little more desperate to try to make plays. We took advantage of it and made some plays on their end. We outnumbered them at the net."

On Luke Kunin's presence
"He's our captain. He does all the little things to set an example and standard for how our team is supposed to play. Remember the World Juniors when he had to block a shot in a three-on-five situation and he blocked it. He has to kill a big penalty or something, he is going to do it. Whatever you ask him when the game is on the line, he is going to do it."

On Jack Berry in the net
"Our team is confident around him. He's been the same pretty much every game he's played. Obviously we need him and he was rock solid."

Trent Frederic
On his line's play tonight:

"I thought we played pretty well, we had two nice goals, but I think we've got to be better for tomorrow. But overall our line played pretty well."

On his second goal and how easy Luke Kunin made it with his pass:
"It was a really nice pass, I had my stick down and he just put it there. I'll take those any day, it was a really nice pass."

On closing out the game after taking a lead:
"I think a couple guys made some nice plays and we were pretty dominating. I think they started to fall in and the energy on the bench went up, another goal comes from a nice play. Obviously putting pucks in the net, it all just falls in. It was nice to get that."

Cameron Hughes
On the team's response to Michigan tying the game 2-2:

"I think any time a team scores, you want a good response. We were lucky enough to get a power play and get a chance to get right back into it. I think we executed pretty well. We've been working on that in practice, so that payoff was the goal and the momentum."

Jack Berry
On rebounding from last weekend:

"I think it starts in practice, obviously just getting confidence back. Working with Sangs (goalie coach Jeff Sanger) a bit, he definitely works on rebound control. There were a few in the first period there that got away from me, but the guys did a great job clearing out pucks in front of me."

On beating Michigan as a native of Holly, Mich.:
"I mean, a win's a win. Any time you can get a win, that's always a good thing. But, being from Michigan, lot of friends on that team and it's always good to beat up on them."
