Wisconsin vs. Penn State
Feb. 10, 2017
Madison, Wis. - Kohl Center

UW Head Coach Tony Granato
On momentum shifts in the game, particularly Penn State's third goal:

"Yeah that was a big one, they took advantage of a bad hop off the boards there on a dumped in puck.

"That's a good team. They were number one in the nation for a long time, for a reason. We did get some momentum back obviously when we got those two goals there in the second. I thought we were coming. So that was a big play in the game for sure, and then the next big play was the start of the third period, we had a chance. We scored a nice power-play goal in the second and we had a full two minutes basically to start the third period again, end up giving up a shorty in the third, that was the one that really took the wind out of us and then they buckled down defensively and protected their net front well, made it hard on us, and we never really generated any more momentum where we had consistent shifts in the offensive zone. That was a good team."

On the sharpness of play compared to past weeks:
"We weren't as sharp as we have been the last couple weeks, but to the other team's credit, they did a good job on how they played us away from the puck. I thought that they stuck with their game plan longer than we did and again, I thought when we did get the momentum back when we got those two goals, that long delay on the timeout was a great play on their coach's part on challenging that. He was calling a timeout and said he challenged it and he got probably an extra two minutes of timeout in that span. They settled back into their game and were able to take advantage of that dumped in puck and it bounced funny off the wall.

"We'll bounce back. We've got a few things that we can be better at tomorrow. We'll be ready and bounce back and play a good game tomorrow."

On moving lines around in the third period:
"We've been doing that a lot, even in games we won in the last two weekends. We've mixed the lines up a lot. We were having trouble getting flow offensively going so mixing some combinations up to see what was going was why we did that."

On Penn State's David Goodwin:
"He was (an emotional force). He's a great player and he made some plays tonight. When he got the puck in the offensive zone he was dangerous. We'll have to be better defensively against him tomorrow, obviously pay a little more attention on how we play against him. Give their team credit, they played a very solid road game, made it hard on us and whenever there was some momentum for us, especially after the two goals, they found a way to stop it."

On the anticipation of more offensive power:
"I know we didn't generate enough offensively. Did they play differently because they got the lead, I don't know. I think we could play better. I know I'm giving them credit, because they deserve it when they played with their game plan extremely well from start to finish even through that stretch when I thought we were coming. There's areas we could be better tomorrow."

On Jack Berry:
"The first two were kind of tough, he couldn't see the one with the screen on the first one. I think the bounce off the wall was a tough one, and it's just one of those things. It bounces off the wall funny and it bounces right in front. We can be better in front of him, he's been pretty good for us all year."

Forward Luke Kunin
On how tough it is to lose momentum after getting a game-tying goal:
"We have to keep our emotions never too high and never too low in a game like that, you just gotta go out and worry about getting the next one. All around we have to be better on the bench when things like that happen and bounce back quicker."

On if the first part of the game felt more like how they wanted to play overall:
"I think we were creating a lot when we were doing things right. When we were sticking with the game plan and getting pucks behind their defense and not turning it over, trying to go out high and do fancy things through the middle and getting pucks to the net, getting bodies to the net, that's more successful. So we just gotta keep sticking to the things that help us win hockey games."

Goaltender Jack Berry
On his play:
"I definitely needed to be better tonight. We go down 2-0 and the guys battled back to make it 2-2, and I let in a tough one that I probably should've guarded with my glove but decided to try and play with my stick and obviously it cost us. So I thought I needed to be better there."

Defenseman Tim Davison
On if he thought the sharpness wasn't there tonight like it has been in past games:
"Obviously it didn't go as smoothly as we had planned. We were kind of on a roll those last five games with those wins and we were connecting the dots pretty well. Today the passes weren't as crisp, we were off a little bit, but that's all part of the game and we've got to be able to fight through that and find a way to win games."

On Jeff Sauer's legacy:
"I had the pleasure of meeting Coach Sauer a few times here on campus. He was an unbelievable human being and a great coach. He was a great ambassador for the game. It's tough to have a moment of silence for him and then to come out and lose 6-3, but it's definitely in the back of our mind that we want to win for him and we want to win for each other and our coaches and the fans. So hopefully we can rebuild, coach will have some film for us and we'll try to get the win tomorrow."
