UW women, Hardy and Hoare qualify for this year’s cross country national meet
MADISON, Wis. – After outstanding performances at the 2017 NCAA Great Lakes Regional, the Wisconsin women's cross country team, along with UW men's cross country student-athletes Oliver Hoare and Joe Hardy, have qualified for the 2017 NCAA Cross Country Championships in Louisville, Kentucky, the NCAA announced Saturday afternoon.
The UW women took third at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday and are one of 13 teams that earned an at-large selection to the Nov. 18 meet in Louisville, Kentucky.
"Coach (Jill) Miller and I are excited that our women advanced to the NCAA championships," UW Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne said. "They deserve to be in the national field based on their consistent performances all season, in particular their results at the Big Ten meet and the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. The system should always reward you for what you do at the conference and regional meets."
Hoare and Hardy finished third and sixth, respectively, at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional as the duo helped the Badgers take third. However, the UW men's team did not receive an at-large invitation to the NCAA meet.
"I'm very happy for Ollie and Joe, but disappointed for the rest of the guys who gave it their all on Friday in Terre Haute," Byrne said. "After a tough day at the Nutty, our guys ran well at Big Tens and the NCAA Great Lakes Regional and it's a shame they weren't rewarded for their efforts at the end of the season.
"To come so close is tough, but our guys will learn and grow from this experience."
The 2017 NCAA Cross Country Championships will take place on Nov. 18 at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky. The women's 6K race will take place at 9:45 a.m. CT with the men's 10K race to follow at 10:45 a.m. Both races can be seen live on FloTrack.
