Award presented to top small forward in women’s basketball
MADISON, Wis. – Cayla McMorris, a senior on the Wisconsin women's basketball team, has been named to the inaugural Cheryl Miller Award watch list. She is one of 20 players named to the 2017-18 preseason watch list by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
The 6-1 McMorris earned honorable mention All-Big Ten Conference honors in 2017, leading the Badgers with 12.3 points per game. The Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, native was the fifth most improved scorer in the Big Ten last season, upping her sophomore year average by 5.8 points per game. McMorris was UW's scoring leader in 12 games in 2016-17 and scored in double figures in 20 games. She also added 4.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game as a junior.
A top-10 watch list will be announced in mid-February with five finalists being released in March. The winner of the 2018 Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award will be announced during ESPN2's telecast of the national semifinal games in the 2018 NCAA Women's Final Four in Columbus, Ohio, on March 30.
"I'm so excited to see the Basketball Hall of Fame expanding their portfolio of awards and recognizing the best athletes in the women's college game today," said Cheryl Miller, a 1995 inductee of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. "I'm honored to represent this award for small forwards and can't wait to see these student-athletes take the court."
