Three players take part in festivities in Los Angeles, one named to Top 100
MADISON, Wis. – It was a 'Super Saturday' for the current Badgers, but for four former Badgers, it was a weekend of great honors.
Over the weekend, three former Badgers played in the 61st NHL All-Star Game in Los Angeles. Teams are selected by division for the 3-on-3 tournament and UW was represented on three different teams.
Ryan McDonagh, who plays for the New York Rangers and has 28 points so far this season, was selected to the Metropolitan Division team. Ryan Suter of the Minnesota Wild, who has seven goals and 23 assists this year, was on the Central Division team while the San Jose Sharks' Joe Pavelski was placed on the Pacific Division team after scoring 16 goals and adding 26 assists through 50 games played.
Prior to the 3-on-3 tournament on Sunday, each division's team took place in the skills competition. All three players took place in the Four Line Challenge, with McDonagh and Pavelski going 0-for-2 while Suter finished 1-for-2. In the shootout between the Atlantic Division and the Pacific Division, Joe Pavelski missed his one attempt against Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens.
On Sunday in the single-elimination, 3-on-3 tournament, Pavelski and the Pacific Division defeated Suter and the Central Division by a score of 10-3. The Sharks' forward picked up a goal and an assist in the game. In the other semi-final matchup, McDonagh and the Metropolitan Division defeated the Atlantic Division, 10-6.
McDonagh and the Metro would emerge victorious in the final, 4-3, against Pavelski and the Pacific. The defenseman made a save with his skate as the puck was heading for the goal with under one minute to play to preserve the one-goal lead.
Another part of the All-Star weekend included the NHL revealing the top-100 players of all-time in celebration of the league's 100th anniversary and former Badger standout Chris Chelios was part of the list.
Chelios was part of Wisconsin's 1983 national championship team while recording 22 goals and 75 assists over two years with the program. He was drafted 40th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft.
He played more games than any defenseman in NHL history (1,651), won the Norris Trophy three times, made the First or Second All-Star Team seven times and won the Stanley Cup three times: once with the Montreal Canadiens and twice with the Red Wings. He also helped the United States win the 1996 World Cup of Hockey and won a silver medal with the Americans in the 2002 Olympics.
Chelios played in the NHL until age 48, matching Gordie Howe's record of playing in 26 seasons while spending time with the Canadiens, Blackhawks, Red Wings and Thrashers over his hall-of-fame career.
Current UW head coach Tony Granato has either played with, played against, coached or coached against at least 46 of the NHL100. Granato skated with 22 of the 100, including Marcel Dionne and Guy Lafleur, who were his first linemates in his NHL debut for the New York Rangers during the 1988-89 season. He also played alongside Wayne Gretzky, Chelios, Mark Messier, Larry Robinson, Patrick Roy, Paul Coffey and Sergei Fedorov, among others.
