Post-match quotes vs. Maryland
Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016
UW Field House - Madison, Wis.Â
Head Coach Kelly Sheffield
Â
Opening Statement:
"First of all, this is a really good win for us. Sometimes teams look at where teams records are and you start making different thoughts on that team and what you should do against teams where they were last year or their record coming in or whatever.
Â
"What we knew about Maryland was this was going to be a team that we were going to be under a lot of stress in with our passers, and that proved to be the case. These guys they serve just so well, they put so much pressure on you with where they are going, the pace they are putting on the ball and they are dropping in some short short serves.
Â
"I thought our passers did really good, at times they were bending but they didn't break. I thought we battled really well back there.
Â
"We weren't in system a lot and that had a lot more to do with their ability than something we weren't doing. I felt we just battled and we stayed with it. When we were in system we were able to do some things, when we were out of system we tried making good swings on the ball and keep defending. I thought it was a really good effort and match.
Â
"On our team, I thought obviously Lauren (Carlini) got things started with her serving. I thought she really set the tone early with where she was going and just really keeping them off balance and we were able to kind of build some momentum in the first. Nelly (
Haleigh Nelson) had a nice offensive match.
Â
"One of the things we know about Maryland is when we are playing them is that some teams, when the fight gets taken to them, they are done but as we saw with Maryland, they are not one of those teams and you can't get them early and then lay down. That's a team that values fighting and hard work and I thought our kids stayed with it. Even from out of the locker room the score was a little bit closer but I thought we stayed in the fight."
Senior MB Haleigh Nelson:
Â
On the second and third sets:
"Things got a little rough in the second and third sets but we really stuck with it in our effort. Our focus never fell off, we just made a few errors and just weren't clean but I think that happens sometimes in matches. Like Kelly said, Maryland is a team that fights really hard and they're a team that will have that happen and then turn up their game and go even harder. Even though those last two set scores were a little bit closer, I'm still proud of how our team played."
Â
On her performance at the net:
"It was kind of different tonight since I had to do a couple of different things because of the way they were moving and they were moving to different places. It was good for me to see something different like that and change up a bit."
Â
Senior Setter Lauren Carlini
Â
On the starting the Big Ten season with two home wins:
"We kind of talked about this earlier in the week how we've never really had a great start to Big Ten play the last few years. We've either started out with a loss or really struggled in the beginning. So coming out and being able to take these two wins at home and then we're going on the road next weekend just builds momentum for us. Every game matters just as much as the one before it and the one after it, so just having that mentality of 'Okay, we've got this win and now we're moving on to the next one and getting back on the train.'"
On if she's ever had four aces in a row:
"Maybe in middle school when I had a top spin. Other than that, no."
On her service aces:
"I was just trying to move the ball around a little bit and not give people the same looks over and over again and get them in a rhythm. I was just trying to keep them on their toes and keep people moving around and balls were falling. It's good because it builds momentum for the team and just gets a rhythm going for the match so it's a good start."
Â
On the improvement of her serve:
"I think I had a good serving year my sophomore year and last year I kind of fell off a little bit. That's one thing I worked on during offseason and during summer, just really focusing on how I contact and having a solid, clean hit, and I think it has been paying off so far."
