MADISON, Wis. – Racing on the first full day of the 2016 Olympic Summer Games, former Badger rower Grace Latz got after it in what was the early afternoon locally in in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Making her Olympic debut as the bow seat of the United States women's quadruple sculls, Latz and her crew placed third in the second heat of the event, which was also the final rowing race of the day.

Poland got off the line first, but eventual heat-winner Germany took over the lead and the race near the 500-meter mark. Latz and the U.S. trailed early and never completely recovered.

The Americans made a push near the 1000-meter mark of the 2000-meter race and pulled back on second-place Poland and the leading Germans, but the top two crews pulled away over the final 500 meters.

Only the winner Germany advanced direct to Wednesday's final. Poland and the United States will row again on Monday in the repechages for a second chance to reach the gold medal race. The women's quadruple sculls repechages are scheduled to start at 8:10 a.m. CT and can be seen via live stream.
