RIO DE JAINERO – Former University of Wisconsin women's hockey and soccer standout Alev Kelter scored twice to lead the United States Women's Rugby Sevens squad to a 48-0 victory over Colombia on Saturday at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The victory marked Team USA's first-ever win at the Olympics, as rugby sevens is making its first appearance at the games.
Kelter put the U.S. on the board early with a try in the first minute of the game to give Team USA a 5-0 lead. She also added another try later in the first half, as the U.S. took a 24-0 lead into the intermission.
A native of Eagle River, Alaska, Kelter scored the only try for Team USA in its 12-7 loss earlier in the day Saturday against Fiji. Kelter's score marked the team's first points ever at the Olympics.
The United States is currently tied for second place in Group A with four points and faces group leader Australia on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. CT in the final game of group play. Fans in the U.S. can watch the game on USA Network or via the NBC Sports app.
