MADISON, Wis. – In Danny Westerman's first season as head coach at Wisconsin, the Badgers proved they could compete with some of the nation's ranked teams. After tallying five wins over ranked teams last season, the Wisconsin men's tennis team will have plenty of opportunities to measure up against the elite again this season.
The Badgers' 2016-17 slate is highlighted with 12 matches against teams that finished last season in the ITA top 75, including five against the top 30. In addition to 12 home matches at Nielsen Tennis Stadium, Wisconsin will host the Big Ten Singles Championships on November 4-7 and make spring road trips to the Florida Gulf Coast Invite and San Diego, California.
"We're excited about this year's schedule," Westerman noted. "More than half of our matches are against ranked teams and we get several of those in front of our home crowd at Nielsen. Our January trip to Fort Myers for the FGCU Invite will be a great individual tournament to help us get ready for dual match play and our guys will see some of the top players there. We are always looking to challenge ourselves and I think this schedule will do that, but I'm confident we can compete every time we take the court."
The fall season will begin with the Milwaukee Tennis Classic on Sept. 16-18 before the team travels to Princeton, New Jersey, for the Ivy Plus on Sept. 23-25. The Badgers will then split up in early October as juniors Josef Dodridge and Lamar Remy participate in the ITA All-American Invite in Tulsa, Oklahoma, while the rest of the squad visits South Bend, Indiana for the Bayliss Invitational.
Wisconsin will travel to Columbus, Ohio, for the 2016 ITA Midwest Regional and then wrap up the fall schedule by hosting the Big Ten Singles Tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium from Nov. 4-7.
The Badgers' spring season opens at the FGCU Invite on Jan. 14-16 where they will compete in individual action against opponents from South Florida (who finished last season ranked 17th), Louisville and host Florida Gulf Coast University.
A four-game homestand opens the dual match season, highlighted by a Feb. 4 contest against Drake, last season's 49th-ranked team. UW pulled off a 4-3 win at then-No. 36 Drake last season. The Badgers will hit the road for four matches at Penn and Princeton (No. 52) before taking on Cornell (No. 54) and Clemson in Ithaca, New York.
Big Ten play opens on March 5 at Iowa (No. 65), six days before hosting the annual Border Battle with Minnesota on March 11. Wisconsin will take a one-match break from conference play for a spring break trip to take on San Diego. The Toreros finished last season 29th in the ITA rankings after going 24-8 and reaching the second round of the NCAA tournament.
In addition to the early match with Minnesota, Wisconsin will host a challenging home slate that includes highly-ranked teams from the previous season: Northwestern (No. 15), Illinois (No. 18), Purdue (No. 50), Indiana (No. 56) and Nebraska. The Badgers' Big Ten slate also includes road trips to Ohio State (No. 4), Michigan (No. 25), Penn State (No. 36) and Michigan State.
Purdue will host the 2017 Big Ten Tournament from April 27-30 in West Lafayette, Indiana. The NCAA tournament begins on May 4.
