Card closes historic season at Olympics

Wisconsin senior is Team USA’s top finisher in discus in Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO – Wisconsin's Kelsey Card capped her historic senior season with a 25th-place finish in the women's discus Monday at the Olympic Games.

The top American in the field of 34 at the Olympics, Card's final attempt of 185 feet, 1 inch was her best mark on a wet and stormy night at Rio de Janeiro's Olympic Stadium.

"It's the Olympics," Card said. "Just being here is awesome! My coach (Dave Astrauskas) and I coming in wanted to recognize the importance of this meet and the atmosphere, but we wanted to remember that it is just another track meet.

"I didn't come out with the marks that I wanted to do, but I came out on top for the U.S. women and that was cool. I like to walk away with that knowledge gained and it was an incredible experience."

"It's been a very long and incredible year for Kelsey," UW Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne said. "Tonight she gave it her all in her first Olympics. She finished ahead of (U.S. teammates) Whitney Ashley and Shelbi Vaughn, who both beat her at the Olympic Trials. I am sure that Kelsey will be disappointed that she missed making the finals, but her experiences in Rio will stand to her as she continues in this sport as a professional."

The 2016 NCAA discus champion, Card made program history when she stepped into the throwing circle in Brazil as the first UW woman to compete in a field event at the Olympics.

On her first throw, Card committed a foot foul on her follow through after tossing the discus more than 180 feet.

Card earned a fair throw of 167-1 on her second attempt before launching the disc 185-1 on her final throw.

Card closed her collegiate career as the Big Ten record holder with her national championship-winning throw of 208-5 earlier this year. She also holds the Big Ten outdoor shot put record at 60-10 3/4 and is the only woman in NCAA history to throw the discus and hammer more than 200 feet and the shot put more than 60 feet.

The Badgers' female Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient, Card won seven individual Big Ten titles, including four during the 2016 campaign, and was a seven-time first-team All-American.

"We are all very proud of Kelsey's accomplishments as a Badger," Byrne said. "She has an unbelievable work ethic and was a great leader for our program. We wish her continued success and know she has a bright future ahead of her as a world-class thrower."
