Former Badger makes trials debut on Wednesday in hammer throw
EUGENE, Ore. – Former Wisconsin men's track and field thrower Michael Lihrman finished 14th in the hammer throw at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials on Wednesday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Â
Lihrman's best effort of the competition came on his first throw of the day, as he slung the hammer 218 feet.
Â
The Rice Lake, Wisconsin, native recorded a throw of 217-4 on his second attempt before earning a mark of 209-1 on his final attempt of the competition.
Â
"I'm starting to feel like a veteran, as this was the least nervous I have ever been," Lihrman, a two-time NCAA champion in the indoor weight throw, said. "The atmosphere was awesome and I felt pretty good. I did something to my collarbone last week and for some reason it didn't feel right. It's definitely hurting now after my throws today."
Â
Lihrman was a part of history on Wednesday with the hammer throw contested inside Hayward Field for the first time in the track's history. More than 5,000 fans were in attendance for the event.
Â
"I have never competed in front of that many people before," Lihrman said. "Today was probably the first time I have ever competed in a stadium ever. It's definitely the coolest meet I have been at and I'm excited to see the future meets here that happen."
Â
Days after making the U.S. Olympic Team in the discus, senior Kelsey Card returns to action on Thursday in the shot put. The qualifying round is set for 1 p.m. CT, while the finals begin at 8:15 p.m.
