TORONTO – Former Wisconsin track and field standouts Mohammed Ahmed and Hilary (Edmondson) Stellingwerff are heading back to the Summer Olympics as the pair were named to Team Canada for the 2016 Rio Olympics on Monday.

The duo competed at the 2012 London Olympics, where Ahmed finished 18th in the 10,000 meters, while Stellingwerff took 16th in the 1500 meters.
Ahmed will compete in both the 5000 and 10,000 meters at the 2016 Rio Olympics, while Stellingwerff will again race in the 1500 meters.

Both Ahmed and Stellingwerff shined at the 2016 Canadian Championships and Selection Trials last weekend in Edmonton, Alberta, as Ahmed won the 5000 meters, while Stellingwerf took third in the 1500 meters.

Ahmed broke his own Canadian record in the 5000 meters earlier this summer with a time of 13 minutes, 1.74 seconds at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon.

During his career at Wisconsin, Ahmed was an eight-time, first-team All-American, won five Big Ten Conference individual titles and led the UW men's cross country team to the NCAA crown in 2011.

Ahmed will compete in the 10,000 meters on Saturday, Aug. 13 at 7:25 p.m. CT. The first round of the 5000 meters is on Wednesday, Aug. 17 at 8:05 a.m. while the final is on Saturday, Aug. 20 at 7:30 p.m.

Stellingwerff competed at UW from 2000-04, where she earned first-team All-America honors in the 1500 meters at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Championships with a fifth-place showing.

She holds a season-best time of 4:05.61 in the 1500 meters, more than a second better than the Olympic standard of 4:07.00.

At the 2012 London Olympics, Stellingwerff missed out on qualifying for the 1500 meter final by one spot, but six of the 12 finalists from the competition went on to fail drug tests after the race.

The first round of the women's 1500 meters is on Friday, Aug. 12 at 6:30 p.m. The semifinals are Sunday, Aug. 14 at 7:30 p.m. with the finals to take place on Wednesday, Aug. 17 at 7:05 p.m.
