Former Badgers standout breaks his own record at Prefontaine Classic
EUGENE, Ore. – For the second time in eight months, Wisconsin alum Mohammed Ahmed broke the Canadian record in the 5000 meters as he finished third in the Prefontaine Classic in 13 minutes, 1.74 seconds on Saturday.
Ahmed lowered his previous Canadian record by more than eight seconds, as he set the previous Canadian record of 13:10.00 last year in Brussels.
Ahmed, who trains under former Wisconsin coach Jerry Schumacher with the Bowerman Track Club, looks to qualify for his second Olympics this summer after representing Canada in the 10,000 meters at the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London.
During his career at Wisconsin, Ahmed was an eight-time, first-team All-American and led Wisconsin to the 2011 NCAA Men's Cross Country Championship. He holds the Big Ten record in the 10,000 meters of 27:34.64 and won five Big Ten individual titles.
