MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Athletic Department showcased its student-athletes at the 2016 Buckinghams held at the Overture Center for the Arts in downtown Madison on Tuesday night.
Aiming to spotlight the overall achievements and excellence of student-athletes, the event recognizes not only the success in their respective sports, in the community and in the classroom, but also their on-stage skills.
A few of the highlights from the evening were a dueling piano performance featuring football's Dare Ogunbowale and Matt Ross from men's golf, a dance performance by Macy Oswald from softball, and Corey Clement from football performing an original musical performance with Amy Riedel.Â
Other acts included:
- A singing performance by Emmy Sehmann from women's swimming and diving
- Shannon Lipe and Nica Wardell from women's lightweight rowing performing a musical act
- A spoken word performance by Tiffany Ike from women's track and field
- A musical performance by rowers Nigel Baummer and Kate Ruffalo
- Nick Jones from men's soccer with a Back to the Future guitar performance
- Katy Josephs from women's hockey playing the piano and singing
Student-athletes had the chance to hit the red carpet prior to the event and attend a dessert reception.
As for the awards, Zak Showalter from the men's basketball team and Kelsey Card from women's track and field were named the male and female Student-Athlete of the Year award winners. The award recognizes the student-athletes who best combine academic and athletic achievements with commitment to community service.
Merritt Denham from women's rowing and Tyson Miehe from men's track and field and cross country received the Unsung Hero award, while football's Chikwe Obasih and Lily Hansen from women's rowing received the Beyond the Game Award of Excellence.
