New staff aims to put Badgers back on top of the hockey world
MADISON, Wis. — The March 30 edition of Varsity Magazine is now available, featuring an in-depth look at the hat-trick hiring of the new men's hockey staff. Wisconsin sent shockwaves throughout the hockey world this week and announced its plans to once again become a force in college hockey with the hiring of Tony Granato, Don Granato and Mark Osiecki.
When UW Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez called Tony Granato, it started as a fact-finding mission to get Granato's thoughts on where Alvarez could turn to find his next head coach. How the conversation turned out was much different than either of them had envisioned. UWBadgers.com Insider Andy Baggot has the inside story about how that one phone call may have changed the direction of Badger men's hockey forever. Read it HERE.

According to Alvarez, both Don Granato and Mark Osiecki were on his head coaching short list. The one who wasn't was Tony, but only because hockey people had told Alvarez he wouldn't be interested. When that changed, the men's hockey 'Dream Team' was formed. Baggot has a fascinating story on what unique qualities each of the three coaches brings. Read it HERE.
Just months after a couple high-profile Badger student-athletes had tough decisions to make on their playing futures, another is facing a similar question. Running back Corey Clement and linebacker Vince Biegel both chose to come back to UW after exploring their NFL options and now junior Nigel Hayes has something to think about. UWBadgers.com Senior Writer Mike Lucas talked with Clement and Biegel, as well as UW head coach Greg Gard and ESPN's Andy Katz on Hayes' NBA process. Read it HERE.
Whether Hayes decides to stay or go, the Badger basketball team returns a full cupboard in 2016-17, a far cry from how they began last season. Lucas talked with Gard extensively on how he plans to maximize the potential of his talented returning cast, including a few changes that may surprise UW fans.
In his weekly column, "The Voice of the Badgers" Matt Lepay writes about the emotional swings of March Madness. Once week, the Badgers were on top of the world following Bronson Koenig's miraculous 3-pointer. Days later they were left wondering what might have been after squandering a last-minute lead.Â
