Junior recaps UW's 8-2 win over Minnesota and previews series at OSU
Happy Gameday Eve Badger fans!
Last weekend the Badgers split with one of their biggest rivals, the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
Saturday's game resulted in a 2-0 loss. The Cardinal and White had a ton of chances, yet the pucks simply were not going in the net.
In Sunday's game, however, it seemed as if the goal horn was on repeat. The Badgers defeated the Gophers 8-2, the highest scoring game for the Badgers this year.
"The team had a great response Sunday. I thought we battled hard and did all the little things right," junior forward Annie Pankowski who tallied a goal in the game off of a sweet backdoor pass from Emily Clark, said. "We made the right adjustments from watching video from Saturday and really took it to them. Sunday's win shows the depth and the character on this team."
Senior superstar Sarah Nurse led the team with a hat trick, sniping left and right throughout the game. She is the first Badger to ever record a hat trick against the Golden Gophers. Her peak performance earned her WCHA Offensive Player of the Week honors. I would like to give her a huge congrats on such an unbelievable game. You deserve it Nursey!
Goals by Sydney McKibbon, Alexis Mauermann, and two from myself added to the Badger win. Freshman Abby Roque recorded a +5 plus/minus rating over the weekend, making her the WCHA Rookie of the Week as well. Congrats Abby!
After such an exciting weekend, the Badgers hope to take this momentum into Columbus, Ohio, for a two-game series against the Ohio State Buckeyes.
"Looking forward to this weekend, I think we have a better understanding of what is expected of us as a whole," Annie said. "Ohio State gave us a great game earlier in the year and I think last weekend gave us a bigger target then we had before."
The Badgers beat the Buckeyes 3-0 before tying them 1-1 earlier this year in Madison. It will be a fun couple of games before going into our holiday break.
The Badgers play Friday night at 2:07 p.m. CT and Saturday at 2:07 p.m. CT. We hope to see you there, and if you cannot make it, follow us via Twitter (@BadgerWHockey) or UWBadgers.com!
Thank you for all of your support! It was an amazing atmosphere last weekend and we can't wait to play in front of the best fans next month. Keep it up!
