Coach and player quotes

Dec. 11, 2016
Wisconsin vs. Northern Iowa
UW Field House - Madison, Wis.

R-Jr. Ricky Robertson

On how exciting it was to get the first win of the season at the UW Field House:
"Yeah, it's good to be back home in front of our home fans. Getting a win against a top ranked team like UNI early in the season is good and I think it proves that we're doing the right things in the practice room and hopefully that'll carry on into the rest of the season."

On feeling the pressure going into his match:
"Not necessarily. Obviously, I know it's a tight dual, but I have faith in myself and I obviously have faith in Connor [Medbery] with the success he's had in his career. So, I mean both of us just have to trust the things that we do and that we're doing them right and just go out and get the win no matter what the pressure might be or what the score might be, we're still looking to get a win no matter what."

R-Fr. Eli Stickley

On how it feels to get his first win at the UW Field House:
"It's fun. It's exciting. The crowd got me going. It was good to have the whole team here. It was just exciting."

On what he was feeling going into his last period:
"I felt really good. I felt him kind of break on top, so I knew I had it in me. I knew it was good to get that one takedown and it kind of set the tone. I knew I was going to get an overtime. It was close, but it was fun too."

On what it does for the team confidence to get so many big, exciting individual matches at the first home dual:
"It really gets people going. I felt the energy of the team right there on the edge, so it was good to be with the team right over there with them and I really heard them cheering so it was exciting."

Head Coach Barry Davis

On how it feels to get the first home win of the year:
"Real good. Our guys bounced back from Friday, a good Big Ten win there, but didn't look like we really, really wrestled. We came out a lot better today and a lot more aggressive, so it was good."

On the exciting win for Eli Stickley:
"It was real exciting. He kept his poise at the overtime there, but the guy got into his leg, we didn't want that, but he stood up and had a big win there. He'll need to grow. You know, he put us in a position to win and they found a winner. The young guys are doing a lot better and we just got to continue to move forward like we're doing now and take a couple days off now and get back to work on Wednesday and go from there."

On how Ricky Robertson and Connor Medbery kept their composure during their matches:
"I think experience and being older that way and effective at the end is nice to have that. I think Ricky kept good poise there, wrestled real smart, took top again in the third period, finished the guy off. You know with Connor, you know he had a great trip last year of course he got the same thing. So, you couldn't have had two better guys to finish the match for you."

On if he was nervous at all throughout the dual:
"I knew there were some tight matches there. You know, it's nice to win these matches either way. Could have been more our favor, could have been more their favor, but it went our way, which is good. You know, we had our revenge from them a couple years ago, so good win to go into the break right now, but again, we still have to work on a few things and get better for certain situations."
