Post-match Quotes vs. Purdue
Nov. 5, 2016
UW Field House - Madison, Wis.
Head Coach Kelly Sheffield
Opening statement:
"It's a really good win. I told the team that not a whole lot of things were going well for us there at the end of the third and the fourth (sets). That had to be really, really hard what they did, just digging down that deep and playing the way that they did when you're in a game five. That was a special performance there at the end. Really happy for them, it was tough to score points out there tonight, I can tell you that."
On how Purdue stole the momentum:
"I don't feel like there's one thing. I think it was quite a few things. Purdue's good.
"We weren't serving real well tonight for a good portion of it. Our serving percentage was really low for almost all of our servers. That's an awful lot of errors for us without many points to go with it, so too many service errors on our first serve going back there and just a lot of balls that were right on them. It was tough, we just weren't doing a good job getting them out of system for a good portion of the match.
"(Faye) Adelaja, she just went off on us with 21 kills hitting .690 with six blocks. She's the lone senior on that team and she just put them on her back. Point scoring was really tough for us, just tough. I thought they were really defending at a high level there for most of the match. We weren't putting pressure on them from the service line for most of it."
Middle Blocker Haleigh Nelson
On coming back after losing the third and fourth set:
"Even though we swept those wins in the first two sets, I wouldn't say we were super proud of how we were playing. We were finishing better than Purdue but they were definitely beating us in fight and it really showed in the third and fourth set. We really didn't have an answer for them, and it says a lot about our team that we were able to put those two sets behind us and perform in the fifth set the way that we did.
"That's the team that we want to be every time we step on the floor and it was really difficult, definitely to bounce back, but we did it together and I think that we will really learn from that and we will come out a lot better next time right away."
On the crazy points in the fifth set, specifically to put Wisconsin up 2-1:
"I'd say it was a big point because it was a long rally, and it's great to win long rallies but I think what's more important is the way we defended and scrapped in that rally. That's the type of team that we are, so to start off the fifth set with a rally like that and set the tone for our defense and our play for the rest of the set, I think that's where that rally really means a lot more. We were able to come out and play and defend the way that we always should and the way we expect ourselves to all the time."
Outside Hitter Molly Haggerty
On playing tonight after coming back from injury:
"Actually I found out I was playing yesterday in serve-and-pass and I just got back in the lineup and my team trusts that I know what to do. I just try to do whatever I can for the team whether I'm a little bit injured or not, I just want to do whatever I can to help this team win.
On her health:
"When I'm playing I'm just in the zone and it doesn't really bother me."
On her big night:
"We've been working a lot of, the last few weeks, on transition hitting, and I think that was a big thing, just getting that approach and what we are setting, whether it's Lauren (Carlini) or whoever is taking it, just try to hit high and in between blocks. So I was just trying to hit hot hands and it was working."
