Postgame Quotes vs. Cornell
Nov. 25, 2016
LaBahn Arena - Madison, Wis.
Head Coach Mark Johnson
On his overall thoughts on the game:
"Good. We played really well."
On having 104 total shots:
"When you've been around hockey long enough, you run into these types of games where you play really well. The key is we just kept telling the players is not to get frustrated but to keep attacking and keep pressuring them and eventually you hope one goes in. The first goal wasn't going to be a pretty goal probably, some kind of garbage goal. Look at the goaltender's eyes and get traffic and track the bounce and
Baylee ends up getting it, then Sarah scores a nice goal, a really nice goal. It was good."
On long droughts without scoring, but it all evening out in the end:
"The big thing is if you doing little things to continue to make progress and get better. Tonight we created energy, we were at full strength, we had the puck a lot and we didn't give up much. Those things are encouraging. The hardest thing about our sport, whether it's our level or other levels, the men's side, is scoring. People defend well, you run into
goaltenders that play well and that's what happened tonight. It could've ended very easily 0-0 and we go to a shootout."
On Nikki Cece:
"It was good. She didn't get tested a lot but when you have three power plays they have and anytime you get that situation teams get excited because they know they have a chance to score. I was happy for her because it was the first time she's played at home in front of a sold-out crowd. Parents were in the crowd and those things give her experience to come back tomorrow night and hopefully put in another good solid effort."
On the next 24 hours:
"The big thing is to manage your time because we're not used to 8 p.m. games. The big thing is that they cool down and they get something to eat tonight and good rest and come back to the rink tomorrow with some video like we normally do. Again, managing your energy and things you do before a game and habits and coming back and playing similar to what we did tonight. If we can come out with the same energy, you know history tells us that we've been able to do it for 14, 15 games, so that's what I anticipate happening tomorrow night. The big thing is can you score."
Senior Sarah Nurse
On her thoughts of the game:
"I think we came out really strong. We obviously got a lot of pucks to net which was one of our goals coming in to this weekend. We'd definitely like to get more goals, but we're really happy with how we came out in the third and responded to them."
On her goal:
"It was kind of near the end of the shift. Mac kind of bumped the puck up and it was either dump or skate the puck in and I saw that I had the edge on her and I just went in. I didn't have any net to shoot on, so I just took a chance, took it across and put it in."
On the puck not going in:
"I guess the biggest thing for us is not to get frustrated. We're a good team and we know that. When we come out in games and the puck's not going in the net, we know it's going to go in eventually. To not get too frustrated on the ice is really important."
On not letting it get in their heads:
"We just control what we can control. We can't control the bounces. We can't control the other team. I think we just have to stick to our game plan. It's important to stick to what we do best."
On fitness:
"We definitely pride ourselves on the level of conditioning we have. I think the third period is really our period and that's where it really shows the work we put in off the ice."
Junior Baylee Wellhausen
On today's game:
"We battled hard until the end. The shots weren't going our way, but I think we did a good job of not getting down on ourselves and staying positive. We just kept putting pucks to the net and we knew it was going to be a scrappy goal that went in."
On not getting frustrated:
"We keep motivating each other on every play and say keep pushing, keep going. We're saying positive things and that's key to us keeping to us keeping the energy.
"It's a hard game to play when everyone's blocking shots. We're going to be working on that for tomorrow's game."
On her goal:
"I just kind of hit the puck and I didn't even know it went in until I saw it in the net and I just got really excited.
I think just visualizing that puck going in is going to be the name of the game tomorrow and hopefully we'll get a couple more goals."
On playing at home, in front of a sell out:
"The roar of the crowd every time you touch the puck is something that we absolutely love and that definitely feeds into our energy as a team. Having that support and having those fans is incredible."
