Head Coach Bobbie Kelsey quotes
January 20, 2016, Kohl Center
Wisconsin vs. Maryland
Opening Statement:

"This Maryland team, they are a great team. They have a lot of weapons over there but I'm proud of my group. They played hard from the beginning of the game and came out with a lot of energy. We executed our offense when we needed to. We got the ball to the certain people that finished. We did a great job of finishing. Nicole, her shots are looking good as they ever have. We need a couple more people to contribute offensively, but I like our energy throughout the game. We never gave up. We kept playing. We kept fighting. This is a really good team. We are aspiring to get to this point of talent. I'm proud of our group and we can build on this even though it was a loss here. It could have been worse but we kept our turnovers down. We had a couple of drops, a couple of finishes around the basket but we have to build on this and get ready for Minnesota."

On Maryland:
"They have an inside outside and when you have that, now everybody is one on one so now it's can you stop individuals and they're talented. All of them can shoot, 22 was really good, that kind of all she does is stand there and shoot but that's all she has to do. Walker came on really hot, we lost her a couple times, we lost 22 a couple of times, and that's on us so we have to fix that. Maybe we have to practice running our practice guys to the three point line so we get used to that. But not a lot of teams can shoot like that but you have to be able to make those in game adjustments. But credit to them. They hit their shots, Jones is a load down there. She just can't be moved. I felt kind of bad for Michala (Johnson), she was trying, but when she gets under the basket in that low corner on either side of the rim, you cannot move her. Period. She's a very talented player."

On trying to build a championship level team:
"I'm glad you ask because everybody always thinks it's so easy. People think you just walk in and players come knock on our door and say 'here we are.' It takes a long time. We don't like to have any kind of excuses but talent is talent. I've been to the top and I know what it looks like and it takes a while to change perception. That's what we're trying to do here and we're just going to keep working and getting kids. We've got a lot of kids coming in that are interested and they really want to go here but when it comes down to it they can only go to one school and when you going up against a school like Notre Dame that has a tradition that we're trying to build. It's not a one year or a two year. I don't know exactly how long but it takes a while. When I was at Stanford that wasn't the Stanford of the four years before that. I've seen Notre Dame when they weren't very good and I played UConn when they were terrible. It takes a while, it really does to get those players to buy into your vision and believe what you believe, but these guys they're the pioneers because they came when it wasn't popular. They're doing the dirty work to get the program to a championship level and then to get those pieces that are going to say 'hey I see what they're doing. They're playing hard and doing the right things even when the game isn't going their way.' When we're up we conduct ourselves with class and when we're down we conduct ourselves the same way. It's more than just basketball, we want to create a championship culture all across the board, off the court, on the court, in the community, in the classroom. We want something Madison people can be proud of."

Player Quotes
Aryanna Young
On defending Brionna Jones:

"She is probably the best player I have ever defended. It was difficult but it is nothing we can't handle. We see them again and we are going to be ready for the next time."

Nicole Baumann
On the shots on defense:

"Like Coach Bobbie said, it's the transition, we weren't getting in the right spot. They are shooting from the three-point line and hitting them. Walker was 6-for-6 and that's unreal, but that's something we have to work on. When someone hits a three in your face, you have to realize that and not let her get another one."

On retaliation from Maryland scoring:
"Just keep running the offense. The whole point of the game is for us to get stops and scores. At first we were getting scores but so were they. We just have to get the stops."

On leaving the Madison legacy:
"We love having Coach Bobbie as a coach and we want to pave the way for her. We want to get those good recruits. Next year, they have a god group coming in. We obviously are not doing as well as we would like but getting those top recruits to come will hopefully help the program."

Maryland Head Coach Brenda Freese
Opening statement:

"I thought Wisconsin came out ready to play. They were red hot in the first quarter. Fortunately for us, Shatori Walker-Kimbrough came out ready to carry the load for the team. I thought once we settled down and were able to establish Brianna Fraser inside, we were able to really extend the game from there. I thought our press was the difference in terms of opening up the game and being able to really utilize our depth in this game. Wisconsin is very tough at home. We feel fortunate any time you can go on the road and get a win."

On the success the program has had its first year and a half in the Big Ten:
"We approach it one game at a time. Every team gives us something different in terms of their presses, defenses, collapsing, and zone. For us, we just kind of try to set our own bar every time we step out. We're just trying to be as consistent as we can."

On how far away she thinks the Badger program is reaching that level:
"I'm on year 14 at Maryland, so it takes time in terms of building recruiting classes and putting them together. The thing I love about Wisconsin is that they play for 40 minutes. They're scrappy and they leave it all out there on the court."

On if the 900th win means anything more to her:
"It speaks volumes in terms of the level of tradition that was started many years before me. That standard of excellence that we try to set the bar to at Maryland. So many great coaches and teams that really pour their heart and soul out when they put on the Maryland uniform like this team does."
