Freshman produced four-point game last Saturday against Ohio State
MADISON, Wis. – With points on all four of Wisconsin's goals in last Saturday's 4-4 overtime tie against Ohio State at the Kohl Center, freshman Luke Kunin was honored Tuesday as the Big Ten Third Star of the Week. The Badgers won a 1-0 shootout following overtime to gain an extra point in the Big Ten standings.
Â
With the Badgers trailing 2-0, Kunin helped open the scoring with the primary assist on Ryan Wagner's goal at 19:35 of the first period to cut the deficit in half.
Â
He then helped set up Adam Rockwood's goal just 49 seconds into the second frame to knot the game at 2-2.
Â
After UW fell behind again by two, Kunin responded with his team-leading seventh goal of the season at 19:48 of the second period to again close the gap.
Â
He then helped finish off the scoring with the primary assist on Grant Besse's game-tying goal early in the third period.
Â
Kunin also led the Badgers with six shots on Saturday and 10 for the weekend.
Â
Kunin's four-point evening marked the first for a Badger since Mark Zengerle and Nic Kerdiles each had a goal and three assists in a 4-2 victory at Penn State on March 7, 2014. It also marked the first four-point game for a Badger rookie since current Ottawa Senators forward Kyle Turris posted consecutive four-point performance against Robert Morris on Oct. 19 and 20, 2007.
Â
Kunin leads the Badgers with seven goals and ranks second on the team with 15 points. His 15 points also rank fourth in the Big Ten in rookie scoring.
Â
Michigan forwards JT Compher (seven points) and Kyle Connor (six points) earned first and second star honors for the week, respectively.
Kunin's award marks the fifth weekly honor for a Badger this season. Seamus Malone was named first star and Matt Jurusik the third star on Nov. 3, while Matt Jurusik was second star on Nov. 10 and Ryan Wagner earned third star recognition on Dec. 8.
