'Varsity' Magazine: Accurate Assessment
December 02, 2015 | General News, Volleyball, Mike Lucas, Andy Baggot
Haleigh Nelson's emergence has coincided with the Badgers' hot streak
MADISON, Wis. -- The Dec. 2 edition of Varsity Magazine is available, featuring a look at the two must-see events in Madison this weekend, the NCAA Volleyball tournament and the No. 1 vs. No. 3 matchup on the ice between the women's hockey Badgers and perennial rival Minnesota.
The volleyball team rolls into this weekend's NCAA tournament having won 12-straight matches. A big reason for that has been the play of junior middle blocker Haleigh Nelson. On pace to break the UW record for career hitting percentage, Nelson's hot streak is the product of a newfound consistency and confidence.
The top-ranked women's hockey team has started the season with 16-straight wins but the biggest test to date comes to Madison this week. Minnesota has been a thorn in the side of the Badgers lately, as the Gophers are unbeaten in the last 18 games in the series, going 16-0-2. UWBadgers.com Insider Andy Baggot previews the series through the unique lens of head coach Mark Johnson, preparing for his 99th and 100th meetings with the Gophers as a player, assistant coach and head coach.
The 'Varsity' Magazine mobile app is free and available for download on iPhones, iPads or any Android devices. If you don't have access to a mobile device, a web-friendly version of the magazine can be found here.
The mobile app has been downloaded more than 25,000 times. It features enhancements like embedded video, social media streams for the different Badgers teams, top-notch photography and interactive elements like scrolling text and swipeable photo galleries.
The football team may have wrapped up the regular season with a 31-21 win over Minnesota but there is plenty of time for reflection. "The Voice of the Badgers" Matt Lepay say UW's 9-3 record is something that should be appreciated, especially when giving it a closer look. UWBadgers.com Senior Writer Mike Lucas checks in with strength and conditioning coach Ross Kolodziej on the Badgers' plan for bowl prep as well as how the team adapted to some changes in the weight room this year.
