Postgame Quotes
Wisconsin vs. Florida
Dec. 10, 2015
Kohl CenterÂ
Head Coach Bobbie Kelsey
On her opening statement:
"Rough one for us. Our defense kind of failed us a little bit, but taking nothing from Florida they have some scorers over there. They have some people that can create their own shots and create off the dribble. We tried to make some adjustments, but we were just a little late on stuff. I'm proud of the team. They came out and really played hard. In the first two quarters, we gave ourselves an opportunity to not dig ourselves a hole. We rebounded better and boxed out better, so we saw some improvement there. Too many turnovers once again, but we're sharing the ball and that's always good. We have to get our post players going a little bit more. They need to get some more touches, so we'll figure that out. All in all, I was pleased with how we came out. It's a lot of pressure on Dakota Whyte and Nicole Bauman. I know they had a lot of turnovers and they're not happy about that. Dakota didn't, but Tessa Cichy and Nicole struggled in that area. When you have these athletic and quick guards, you need a little help to bring that ball up and take a little pressure off of you. We shot better all the way around. Free throws need some work, but I was pleased with our effort, and that's what we were looking for."
On the fast start and what they were unable to do as the game progressed:
"We came out focused. We knew from that Marquette game that we weren't pleased with our performance from the beginning of the game. That's why we lost that game. We didn't give ourselves an opportunity. People were focused, ready to go. We hit some nice shots in the beginning and ran our offense really well. We just have to keep refining things. We're going to build off of this even if it's a loss. We need to come out like this every game. Every team doesn't have 13 people that can do some of the things Florida can do. This is a confidence booster even though it's a loss. I look at it that way because we're showing up in some areas that we needed to show up. In the next game, we're going to come out and really pound on Green Bay because they're not as big or as fast. Taking nothing away from them, they have their own strengths, but they don't look like Florida."
On how difficult it is to go against a team with such depth like Florida:
"They're deep, as you can see. Only one kid played one minute. Everybody else played double-digit minutes. It's tough. Two of their substitutes had 20 and 18 points. They have a lot of guards that can do certain things. If it's not one kid, somebody else gets going."
Dakota Whyte:
On how they prepared for the game:
"We definitely prepared for their pressure. Sometimes when you're out there and you have adrenaline in the game, you can kind of fall sometimes, but I just think that we have to do a better job of being confident in our dribble and staying poised at all times. But I think that for the most part, we just have to finish and we have to score and play defense."
On getting tired during the third quarter:
"I don't necessarily think that we got tired, I think our conditioning is pretty good. But when you waste energy doing things you might not need to do, like running around people when you should be in the gap—that's what our defense is supposed to do—that maybe just wasted energy and wasted movement just being inefficient."
On what happened during the stoppage in the third quarter when she drew a foul:
"I think as I turned around, I went to contest a shot and my hand dropped back and her face was kind of there so she fell. My hand touched her face so they called a flagrant."Â
Nicole Bauman:
On scoring her 900th career point:
"My teammates are the ones helping me out with that, they find me when I'm open. But honestly that's not exactly the view considering we lost."
Florida Head Coach Amanda Butler
Opening Statement:
"Really proud of my team because this is a very difficult place to play. Wisconsin was more than ready, I think Bobbie did a great job preparing her team and they had a great game plan. They came out and really set the tone in the first half but I was really proud of my bunch to rally and play with the toughness that I think is part of who we are and really just be a different team in the second half."
Â
On her team's improved defense play in the second half:
"It was huge. It was great to finally execute that and make that important because we certainly tried to press in the first half it was just that we didn't do it very effectively. Again, you've got to give credit to Wisconsin for their preparation and really being ready for it. I think our depth and the fact that we just had more energy in the last 20 minutes really made a difference maybe for some of those kids that are playing bunches for them and we had fresh bodies on the floor still."
Â
On her team's defensive performance in the first half:
"We mixed it up quite a bit but I just really didn't feel like we were playing well defensively in any thing, I was really kind of searching for some answers just to be honest with you. We have two or three things that we think we can do pretty well and we didn't execute on the defensive end very well. We were kind of looking for some magic and we kind of just kept pulling things out there to try and figure out what is going to work and what we were going to make important. We really didn't find the answer in the first half and like I said it was maybe a little fatigue for them in the second half was what helped our defense."
Â
On Simone Westbrook's performance:
"She is our spark. She is just a player--I would think if you're playing against her--that it's just hard to account for what she does. She's super quick and has ninja hands so she steals and tips and just really makes ball-handlers uncomfortable. Some of the things that she does on the offensive end, it's just hard to stop her. She's quick, she's shifty and she's fearless, so when you combine all of those things with just being talented and really having a desire to win, that's a tough matchup for anybody. When she plays with that kind of energy she's capable of taking over a game."
Â
On preparing for this season after last year's disappointment:
"We've got a team of a lot of returners, we've got a team with five seniors and a lot of kids that were a part of that disappointment last year. I'm sure they were having a lot of conversations about disappointment and the way they felt last year but those are things as coaches that we don't really have to talk about too much when you have a senior-laden team. They handle the locker room, so I'm sure they had a lot of conversations. This group has a lot of pride."
