Desbiens receives league defensive honors; Cogan earns first rookie of the week award
MADISON, Wis. -- After sweeping Minnesota State to improve to 10-0-0 this season, junior Ann-Renée Desbiens and freshman Sam Cogan took home weekly honors from the WCHA, the organization announced Wednesday.
Â
Desbiens was honored as the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week for a second-consecutive week, while Cogan won her first-ever WCHA Rookie of the Week award.
Â
Desbiens was a cut above the rest last weekend for the No. 3 Badgers in their sweep of Minnesota State. The Badgers earned a 6-0 victory last Friday and completed their sweep with a 7-0 victory on Saturday.
Â
The La Malbaie, Quebec, native turned back shot after shot, denying all 16 attempts fired by the Mavericks on Friday night. Saturday's matinee proved to be of the same result as Desbiens stopped all 18 shots.
Desbiens has played a large part in UW's eight straight shutouts recorded this season, which is the longest streak in NCAA men's or women's hockey.
Â
Her goals against average of 0.23 and her save percentage of .985 are the best of all NCAA goalies with more than one start, while Desbiens is one of three goalies this season with a perfect winning percentage. Desbiens also leads the country in shutouts with seven this year.Â
She received her ninth career WCHA weekly honor, as she was named the WCHA Rookie of the Week three times her freshman season and was named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week four times last year.
Â
Meanwhile Cogan had a four-point weekend for the Badgers, scoring a power-play goal while adding an assist in UW's 6-0 win over the Mavs on Friday. The Ottawa, Ontario native added a pair of assists in UW's 7-0 victory against MSU on Saturday.
Cogan finished the weekend with a +3 rating and led all WCHA freshmen and ranked third nationally with four points last weekend.
Desbiens, Cogan and the No. 1 Badgers head to Duluth, Minnesota, to take on Minnesota Duluth on Nov. 13-14. Faceoff for both contests at the AMSOIL Arena is at 3 p.m. (CT).
