Badgers roll past UW-River Falls in exhibition

Happ and Hayes each score 16 points to lead Wisconsin to 101-46 win

MADISON, Wis. -- The Kohl Center crowd got its first primetime look at UW's new freshman class Wednesday night and the Badger newcomers didn't disappoint. Freshmen Ethan Happ, Alex Illikainen, Charlie Thomas and Khalil Iverson combined for 44 points and 27 rebounds in Wisconsin's 101-46 exhibition win over Div. III UW-River Falls.

Replacing over 60 percent of their scoring from a year ago, as well as national player of the year Frank Kaminsky, the Badgers know it will take a balanced effort. That's exactly what they got against the Falcons. Six players scored in double figures, including a game-high 16 from Happ and junior Nigel Hayes. Happ finished with a double-double, adding 10 rebounds, while Hayes just missed one, securing nine rebounds to go with a game-high six assists.

"He's a natural around the basket," Bo Ryan said of Happ. "He works hard for position and you reward people that work hard. His teammates count on him getting open in there and he has good hands. His hands are twice the size of most peoples. He's a presence in there. He's going to be a factor and he kind of showed that tonight."

Happ, who redshirted last season, finished 7-for-9 from the floor while adding a pair of assists and blocks, including one that was tossed into the third row.

"We've been working hard and it's nice to go against somebody else finally," Happ explained. "I had my ups and downs. I had some spots where I could've done better but it's been a while since I've been out there in the rotation like that so it was a lot of fun."

The other three scholarship freshmen in uniform against UW-River Falls filled out the box score quite nicely as well. Illikainen knocked down a 3-pointer on his first shot attempt before going inside for the rest of his 12 total points and seven rebounds. Thomas had an identical stat line with 12 points, seven boards while Iverson tallied four points, three rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

"I'm just trying to do all the little things to get on the floor and stay out there, like rebounding, playing defense, and hustling, all the things Coach Bo emphasizes, especially to us freshman," Thomas said.

Junior Bronson Koenig and sophomore Riley Dearring rounded out UW's double-digit scorers, netting 10 points each. Koenig also finished with three rebounds and three dimes.

As a team, Wisconsin shot 54.4 percent from the field while holding the Falcons to just 20.8 percent. The Badgers connected on all six of their 3-point attempts in the first half and finished 9-for-20 (.450) from long range. UW would out-rebound UWRF 57-25 on the night, owning a 40-8 advantage on points in the paint.

The Badgers will tip off the regular season and raise the 2015 Final Four banner when they host Western Illinois at the Kohl Center on Nov. 13. Tip is set for 8 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
