MADISON, Wis. - For the third straight season, the Wisconsin volleyball team will compete in the NCAA tournament. The Badgers (24-6, 16-4 Big Ten) were selected as the No. 6 overall seed when the 64-team bracket was announced on Sunday night. UW will host first and second-round matches on Thursday and Friday at the UW Field House.
Iowa State (18-10, 11-5 Big 12), coached by former UW assistant coach Christy Johnson Lynch, takes on Miami (Fla.) (21-9, 14-6 ACC) in the first match on Thursday at 5 p.m. Wisconsin faces Oregon (16-13, 10-10 Pac-12) in the second match on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. First-round winners will advance to the second round match on Friday at 7 p.m.
"We've got three real quality opponents from great volleyball conferences that are coming into our place," UW head coach Kelly Sheffield said. "We're excited about hosting, we're excited about being in the tournament.
"There is certainly no easing into the NCAA tournament with the draw that we got and I'm okay with that. You don't look for any favors or gifts or anything like that. But we certainly have a heck of a threesome that will be coming into Madison. We're excited about getting going."
All-session ticket packages for the first and second-rounds will go on sale at noon on Monday. Only all-session tickets (three matches) are available in advance with single-session tickets on sale on Thursday at 8:30 a.m.
The Badgers are 37-18 (.673) in 18 NCAA tournament appearances. Wisconsin has hosted first and second-round matches 15 times, including in 2014 when it defeated Western Michigan in the first round and Illinois State in the second round. UW advanced to the NCAA Louisville Regional final last season, losing to eventual national champion Penn State, 3-1.
"It's probably about fair," Sheffield said of the Badgers' six seed. "It's probably about where we thought we would be. I didn't think we'd be four (seed). We thought probably that six or seven group. We knew that we were getting in, we knew that we were hosting. We felt pretty good about that. We'll be ready to play."
A record nine Big Ten Conference teams made it into the NCAA tournament, including No. 2-seed Minnesota, No. 4-seed Nebraska, and No. 7-seed Penn State.
