Postgame Quotes: Wisconsin vs. Drake

Coach and player quotes

Opening statement: "Well I'm obviously very disappointed in our effort tonight. Give credit to Drake, they came out on fire and they never cooled off. They hit all their shots and the ones they didn't hit they were going to the basket and getting fouled. They had five people in double figures. We had four but that wasn't enough. We're going to go back to the drawing board. We did a good job on the offensive boards but they were crashing in and coming down on us. But again, they had 28 points off our turnovers and our turnovers were just too much. We're going to have to try to fix that."

On why Drake was so successful on the offensive end:

COACH KELSEY: "Some of it was miscommunication on our part. We talked about what we wanted to do in timeouts and we would have one person messing it up – not paying attention. When that happens you get somebody coming in late, they get open shots and that's it. And against this kind of team you can't have mental errors like that. You have to know what you're doing, five people out there working together, on the same page and we don't have that."

On the game plan against Drake's shooting:

COACH KELSEY: "Get in their face and make them put it on the floor. Don't give them open looks. Stay in your stance. We did start switching there and that tended to work until, like I said, one person not doing what they're supposed to do. I'm sure you saw it. We were running around like a ragdoll –just switch, its simple. It's not hard. But when you're not paying attention you don't know what you're doing. When you don't talk you don't know what you're doing. That's totally on the people on the floor. You have to pay attention in the huddle and you have to be on the same page. They took total advantage of that and they didn't miss. That's one thing if we couldn't miss but we couldn't buy a basket, I don't know if a lid was on it or if we go to the free-throw line. Avy (Young) struggled but it's not on her. We have to do a better job of running the offense. When we ran the offense, we scored."

On the biggest take-away from today's game:

COACH KELSEY: "It's the little things. You have to do all the little things. That's on both ends of the floor. Just being precise and really crisp with what you're doing. Everybody knowing what they're doing. That's the biggest take-away. They sliced us up with their offense but once we put the pressure on them they turned it over. We had a nice little run there when they traveled a couple times. We got some people off balance handling the ball that didn't want to. It wasn't all bad but again, they hit every shot and we couldn't hit what we were supposed to and you can't trade twos for threes. You're going to lose every time with that."

Senior G Nicole Bauman

On her 3-point shooting:

BAUMAN: "My form is a little off so I'll get in the gym and work on it."

On Drake coming back with 3-pointers after every Wisconsin run:

BAUMAN: "Like Coach Bobbie said, just a lack of communication and someone not on the same page. Clearly we need to work on that."

Senior G Dakota Whyte

On tonight's pace:

WHYTE: "I don't think it was necessarily terrible. When they came out in that match-up zone, that kind of slowed us down a little bit. We had to think twice. Usually our pace is go-go-go, especially with the offense that we run. Usually we don't really have to think but I think the zone slowed us down."

On struggling from the 3-point line and free-throw line:

WHYTE: "It's definitely hard. I think tonight I struggled finding my teammates inside and trying to get something close to the basket. Obviously some of our outside shots weren't falling but we'll work on it and get better."

 Jennie Baranczyk

Opening statement: I'm really proud of the way that our team came out today. It was a total team effort. Wisconsin is a very good basketball team they're going to do some great things. They're a senior-led team. We had zero answer for Michala Johnson so I was glad she was a little bit limited. I'm really proud of our experience and yet our freshman came in and did some really big things. Coming in and hitting some really big threes and also a couple things defensively. Overall, really happy to be able to come here and come away with the win.

On what made them successful defending the perimeter:

COACH BARANCZYK: I think because they had 38 points in the paint. They probably didn't need to shoot as much outside. Honestly, the more we can play team defense and we really tried to focus on Nicole Bauman for sure from the outside and how to play some percentages. And again, we didn't have an answer for them inside. We tried multiple things to limit them inside but they didn't have to go outside today.

On what they looked at in film to give them open shots:

COACH BARANCZYK: I think the biggest thing for us so far for is, we have a style of play, we have a tempo, so were trying to get up and down, we want to get fast break shots. That's what we want to do and then we want to run a motion offense. So it's not something we knew we would take advantage of, that's just something we do, that's just part of our system. Our motion offense, our players love playing it, they buy into it. When we move and we pass the ball, really good things happen. When we don't? They don't.

On winning against both Iowa State and Wisconsin to open the season:

COACH BARANCZYK: I hope it means we continue to get better. Here's the thing, we have a really tough non-conference schedule so it's not just those two teams. But to be 2-0 and sitting up here? I'm really excited about that. The biggest thing for us, we had to compete with a team in Iowa State that we never competed with, and we competed with them and finally got to compete with them and beat them. And then this team is a really good team. They have what we don't have. Their inside presence, we don't have that. So for us to be able to come here, on the road, for the first time with a young team? I couldn't be more proud of the way that everybody came out and did their part. There are a lot of things we need to work on, like the 15 offensive boards, that's something we need to work on. In this first two games we've given up way too many. But these are lessons we're going to learn and we're inches away and getting better.
