Baylee Wellhausen recaps the bye week and looks ahead to Minnesota Duluth
Hello there Badger Fans!
It's been a while since I've written, and I have a plethora of things to say so bear with me! I hope you all are enjoying this week, preparing for the Thanksgiving feasts that are to come before we know it.
In my last entry the Badgers were heading into a weekend against Minnesota State. The weekend proved to be a success, as the Badgers tackled the series, winning 6-0 on Friday and a 7-0 on Sunday. Goals were scored by a wide array of players over the two games, including two goals apiece from Courtney Burke, Sophia Shaver, and myself, along with goals from Samantha Cogan, Erika Sowchuk, Kim Drake, Rachel Jones, Mellissa Channell and Sydney McKibbon.
In other exciting news, the Badgers have taken the number one spot in the USCHO and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls, surpassing Boston College (2) and University of Minnesota (3).
In addition, senior defenseman Courtney Burke reached a remarkable 85 points in her career as a Badger over the Minnesota State weekend, making her tied at 4th for most among defenseman in UW history.
I asked Courtney to reflect on her recent accomplishment: "I didn't really know I was even up that high in points for defense in this program," she stated. "So it was cool last weekend when AJ, our media person, tweeted about it to me. I think that it's pretty awesome to be mentioned with some of the past defenseman that had great careers here." Way to go, Captain.
After a hard couple of practices and workouts entering the off weekend, the Badgers had time to relax and recover free from playing any games. Catching up on homework, visiting family, volunteering, and attending the last Farmer's Market of the year were among the plethora of activities in which the players took part.
This week we're back to business preparing to take on the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs in a two game series: Friday and Saturday at 3:00 pm. We're all itching to throw on our game jerseys and hit the AMSOIL Arena ice. The keys to success the team has been emphasizing all week is to maintain the momentum we've gathered by staying strong in all zones, creating opportunities and capitalizing on them, and continuing to enjoy playing the game we love. After all, as Coach Johnson often reiterates, every day is a great day for hockey!
